STMicroelectronics has reached a significant milestone in its global manufacturing strategy with the commencement of volume deliveries of STM32 microcontrollers produced entirely within China. The first batch of locally manufactured STM32 wafers has now been delivered to customers, marking the launch of a fully localized production and supply chain model for one of the company’s most widely adopted product families.
The initiative has been developed in collaboration with Huahong and represents a major step toward strengthening supply chain resilience and responsiveness for customers operating in China. By establishing a complete local manufacturing ecosystem, STMicroelectronics aims to provide customers with enhanced supply flexibility while maintaining the same quality, performance and reliability standards associated with its global production network.
The newly introduced manufacturing model covers the entire production process, from wafer fabrication through packaging and testing. Front-end wafer manufacturing is carried out using advanced 40-nanometer embedded non-volatile memory technology, aligned with the same processes and quality systems utilized at ST’s international fabrication facilities. Packaging and testing activities are supported through the company’s operations in Shenzhen along with local semiconductor assembly and test partners.
This achievement positions STMicroelectronics among the first global semiconductor companies to establish a dual-source manufacturing strategy for advanced microcontroller products in China. Customers now have the option to source identical STM32 devices from either local or international production lines while benefiting from complete compatibility across product specifications and performance requirements.
The initial rollout focuses on general-purpose STM32 microcontrollers, with plans already underway to expand local manufacturing to additional product families. Future production will include performance-oriented, secure and entry-level STM32 devices, further broadening the company’s ability to serve diverse application requirements across industrial, consumer, automotive and connected-device markets.
The localization effort reflects the growing importance of semiconductor supply chain diversification as manufacturers seek greater operational resilience and regional sourcing capabilities. By establishing manufacturing closer to customers, STMicroelectronics aims to shorten response times, improve supply continuity and support the rapid pace of innovation across China’s electronics sector.
STM32 microcontrollers are widely used in applications ranging from industrial automation and smart appliances to connected devices, energy systems and advanced mobility solutions. The expansion of local manufacturing is expected to support increasing demand for microcontroller technologies as industries continue their digital transformation journeys.
With approximately 49,000 employees worldwide, STMicroelectronics develops semiconductor technologies for mobility, industrial automation, energy management, and connected devices. The company continues to advance sustainability goals, including its target of achieving carbon neutrality across key operational areas and sourcing 100 percent renewable electricity by the end of 2027.
