Elbit Systems has inaugurated a new Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) facility in Chitila, marking a significant step in the company’s continued expansion in Europe and its long-standing association with Romania’s defence sector. The newly established site is the seventh production facility set up by Elbit Systems in Romania, reflecting its sustained focus on strengthening local industrial partnerships and advancing technological capabilities.
The facility has been developed under the Watchkeeper XR program and will serve as a comprehensive centre for the production, integration, testing, and maintenance of advanced unmanned aerial platforms. The inauguration ceremony was attended by representatives from the Romanian government and armed forces, along with senior leadership from Elbit Systems.
During the event, Yoram Shmueli, General Manager of Elbit Systems Aerospace, highlighted that the Watchkeeper XR platform completed its first flight in Romanian airspace earlier in the day. He stated that the establishment of the new facility reinforces the company’s commitment to Romania and reflects confidence in the country’s industrial ecosystem. He added that the focus extends beyond delivering platforms to providing reliable and mission-ready systems designed for operational effectiveness.
The Chitila facility will support the production of advanced UAS platforms that incorporate modern technologies and operational insights drawn from recent global deployments. These systems are expected to enhance the capabilities of the Romanian Armed Forces by offering proven performance and improved operational readiness.
The localised production approach is also aimed at strengthening Romania’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing, while supporting long-term sustainability through in-country expertise and infrastructure. By building systems within Romania, the initiative contributes to the development of domestic capabilities and ensures closer alignment with national defence requirements.
Elbit Systems has maintained a presence in Romania for over 30 years and currently employs more than 1,000 professionals across its operations in the country. The company’s activities extend beyond manufacturing to include technology transfer, lifecycle support, and the development of local talent.
The opening of the Chitila facility reflects Elbit Systems’ broader approach of fostering local industrial growth while supporting the evolving needs of defence forces. Through continued investments, the company aims to contribute to strengthening regional security capabilities and enhancing collaboration with European partners.
