In the traditionally male-dominated world of manufacturing, women have long faced numerous challenges in establishing themselves as industry leaders. Yet, amidst these challenges, some remarkable women have strongly stood against patriarchy, inspiring future generations. One such female is Sutapa Basu, a woman who defied societal expectations and overcame significant hurdles to emerge as a force in the manufacturing sector. As part of Machine Maker’s ’30 Days, 30 Stories’ campaign.
A New Path: Stepping into Manufacturing
Sutapa Basu is a dynamic leader managing multiple businesses, including Durgapur Engineering Company Limited, Lata Engineering Company, and Soobarnita Fabricators. Alongside her corporate roles, she drives social change through Shidheswari Maa Trust, supporting underprivileged communities. “And my main objective is to build old age homes for the old people. I am more for senior citizen care unit, and of course, with my trust, I look after small children and old age people. And of course, women in need”, she quotes.
With a background in Post Graduation in English literature from Calcutta University, she initially had no direct connection to the engineering world. However, as life unfolded, circumstances led her to step into the family business at a crucial time. Like many women from business families, she was expected to remain on the periphery—more of a stakeholder than an active participant. But when challenges emerged in 2017, following the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), she felt an urge to step forward and take charge.
The business, which had been running since 1962, faced a downturn, and Sutapa realized that to safeguard its future, she had to break free from the limitations society had imposed on her. With no formal technical training, she relied on sheer perseverance to understand the complexities of manufacturing. She took photographs of machinery, studied technical manuals, and observed engineers at work, gradually equipping herself with the knowledge she needed to contribute effectively.
Challenges of Being a Woman in a Male-Dominated Industry
Entering the manufacturing industry as a woman came with its fair share of obstacles. Clients often doubted her capabilities, questioning her technical expertise and decision-making abilities. “Sometimes I have such experiences from India, that when I pick up the call and they find that it is a woman calling, they immediately disconnect themselves.”

However, Sutapa refused to let these biases define her journey. Rather than seeing her lack of a technical background as a weakness, she turned it into a strength by focusing on problem-solving, customer service, and business development. Her dedication to responding to client concerns and ensuring quality service helped her earn trust and credibility over time- “Once you are able to challenge and do something, are able to show off that yes you are the person, yes you do good work in the field, in your engineering field or manufacturing field, you can solve critical problems when you are already totally tied up with lots of problems, still you solved it.”
Another significant challenge was the deep-seated gender bias within her own organization. Manufacturing has long been viewed as a physically demanding job, unsuitable for women. Her father-in-law, like many of his generations, firmly believed that women should not be involved in such labour-intensive work. She worked tirelessly to prove that women could not only manage but also excel in the sector.
Breaking Stereotypes and Accelerating Action
Sutapa’s journey is evidence to accelerate action’. She has not only shattered stereotypes but has also actively worked to create opportunities for women in manufacturing. Her leadership has helped challenge the notion that engineering and technical fields are the sole domain of men.
One of her major contributions has been advocating for increased female representation in factory roles. While women have traditionally been confined to back-office jobs such as HR and accounting, she believes that they should be encouraged to take up technical and operational roles as well. By fostering a more inclusive work environment, she is paving the way for the next generation of women in manufacturing.
The Role of Mentorship and Spiritual Resilience
Like many successful individuals, Sutapa credits mentorship as a key factor in her journey. She actively sought guidance from industry veterans, business coaches, and even her own children, who encouraged her to embrace innovation and new perspectives.
Beyond professional mentorship, Sutapa also turned to spiritual techniques like Reiki and chanting to manage stress and maintain a positive outlook. These practices helped her stay resilient, make clear-headed decisions, and navigate the challenges of running a business in a demanding industry.
A Vision for the Future: Empowering Women in Manufacturing
Sutapa’s story is not just about personal success; it is about lifting others along the way. She is a firm believer that women have the capability to excel in any industry—including manufacturing. By fostering a supportive work environment, encouraging women to take on leadership roles, and providing opportunities for professional growth, she is actively shaping a more inclusive future.
Her journey also extends beyond the corporate world. Through her charitable trust, Shidheswari Maa Trust , she is working to support underprivileged individuals, particularly elderly citizens, women, and children. Her vision is to build old age homes that offer security and dignity to senior citizens who have no one to rely on. Even in its early stages, the trust is already making a difference, embodying her commitment to social responsibility.
Lessons from Her Journey
For women aspiring to enter manufacturing or any male-dominated field, Sutapa Basu emphasizes the importance of stepping out of comfort zones, embracing challenges, and staying resilient despite societal biases. She highlights the value of building a strong support network, continuously learning through experience, and maintaining a positive mindset with gratitude, which collectively pave the way for success.
Final Thoughts: A Story of Courage and Transformation
Sutapa Basu’s journey exemplifies courage, transformation, and the power of action. From a homemaker to a business leader, she has redefined what it means to be a woman in manufacturing. Her story is a beacon of inspiration, proving that gender should never be a limitation when it comes to ambition and capability.
The future of manufacturing is not just for men—it is for everyone who dares to dream and work hard to make those dreams a reality. Sutapa Basu is living proof of that truth.
