In a significant move aimed at advancing gender diversity in the manufacturing sector, Ashok Leyland Limited inaugurated its ‘Women-centric Cabin Trim Line’ at its Pantnagar plant. The noteworthy aspect of this initiative is that out of the 117 associates running this line, over 90% are women. Additionally, all five executives overseeing this division are also women.
Accelerating the evolving landscape of the manufacturing sector in India, Ashok Leyland Limited, one of the nation’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers, is setting new benchmarks by actively promoting women in traditionally male-dominated roles. Leading the charge at Ashok Leyland is Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director and CEO, who recently inaugurated the ‘Women-centric Cabin Trim Line’ at the company’s Pantnagar plant, underlining the firm’s unwavering commitment to gender diversity.
This initiative is not an isolated one for Ashok Leyland. Earlier this year, the company had already set a precedent by launching an all-women line at their Hosur plant. These moves are reflective of Ashok Leyland’s unwavering commitment to its ambitious goals centered around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director and CEO of Ashok Leyland Limited, expressed his exhilaration. “Inaugurating the ‘Women-centric Cabin Trim Line’ was a truly thrilling experience for me,” said Mr Agarwal. He continued, “Witnessing such dynamism, determination, and camaraderie among these young women, many of whom hail from humble backgrounds and have recently completed their vocational education, was heartwarming. Their eagerness to make a meaningful mark in their careers and make their families proud is commendable.”
Mr Agarwal emphasised that these initiatives underscore the company’s strategy to break traditional norms and stereotypes, especially in a sector like manufacturing, which has long been male-dominated. “It’s a proud moment for us at Ashok Leyland to pave the way for women in manufacturing, ensuring they have the right platform to shine,” added Mr Agarwal.

Furthermore, while at the Pantnagar plant, Mr Agarwal also inaugurated a new multi-floor canteen facility, emphasizing the company’s intent to promote a unified organisational culture. The new canteen will cater to the entire workforce, eliminating any hierarchical distinctions, thus fostering a stronger sense of unity and camaraderie among the staff. As Ashok Leyland continues to break barriers and set new standards in the industry, how other manufacturing giants respond to such progressive steps remains to be seen.
