Steel shots were widely used in blasting applications to prepare metal surfaces before painting. The process created controlled micro-indentations on the surface of steel or fabricated components, improving paint adhesion and ensuring longer-lasting coatings. Effective surface preparation played a crucial role in enhancing product durability, corrosion resistance, and overall finish quality.
During IFEX 2026, the company outlined the benefits of low carbon steel shots over conventional high carbon alternatives. The key difference lay in their chemical composition and internal microstructure, which directly influenced durability, performance consistency, and overall operational efficiency.
Low carbon steel shots contained a lower carbon percentage, contributing to an extended lifecycle. While conventional high carbon shots typically offered a lifecycle of around 3,000 cycles, low carbon variants achieved up to 4,500 cycles. This extended durability reduced overall consumption rates and improved cost efficiency for industrial users.
In addition to lifecycle benefits, structural differences further enhanced performance. High carbon steel shots were generally martensitic in structure. Over repeated blasting cycles, martensitic shots tended to develop micro-cracks and structural weaknesses, leading to fragmentation and loss of roundness. Once the shots lost their spherical shape, blasting efficiency declined and replacement became necessary.
By contrast, low carbon steel shots featured a bainitic structure, which provided improved toughness and structural integrity. This enabled the shots to retain their round shape for a longer period, ensuring consistent blasting performance and reduced breakdown during operation.
