Many Micro and Small Scale industries in the manufacturing sector are not aware of Green Practices, and they are facing challenges in areas like energy conservation, water conservation, air quality protection and waste management. The Rotary Club of Gandhi Bhavan Pune is taking the initiative to create awareness in this sector, and felicitate the companies that are implementing green practices.
The manufacturing industry in India has grown into diversified areas over years, and Pune is a hub of manufacturing industries. Green Practices play a very important role today in terms of the current climate change, adhering to the Paris Agreement and taking measures to protect the environment. When large companies are able to implement green practices in their country, most of the MSMEs in the manufacturing sector do not follow the energy protection and energy-saving initiatives. “Our aim is to bring awareness to this critical issue among the manufacturing MSMEs”, said Keshav Vinayak Tamhankar, past president of the Rotary Club Gandhi Bhavan, Pune.
Rotary Club of Gandhi Bhavan Pune is taking a step to address this challenge among the manufacturing MSMEs in Maharashtra. To begin with, during this year along with some of the other industry bodies, they reached out to 4000 manufacturing MSMEs in the city with a set of questions to find the steps they had already taken on making their Factory Green. They got an encouraging response where hundreds of companies shared their answers to the first set of questions shared. The organisers selected 8 manufactuirng SMEs from the list, did an audit of the green practices they were following in the areas of energy conservation, water conservation, air quality protection and waste management, and finally selected three companies.
On 4 June 2022, Rotary Club of Gandhi Bhavan Pune will felicitate these three manufacturing SMEs who did some remarkable achievements in implementing green practicies as part of the their Green Factory project. Sadashiv Survase, Joint Director of Government of Maharashtra will be the Chief Guest, and DGND Rtn Sheetal Shah as Guest of Honour will be present at this event.
“During the last 6 months, we tried to understand the companies who are implementing green practices, especially in the areas of energy conservation, water conservation, air quality protection and waste management. Further, 50 companies were identified as supporters of green practices out of which 10 companies were selected. A proper investigation was done into these 10 companies and the top 3 companies are considered successful in implementing green practices. The project was supported by the industry dept. of Govt. Of Maharashtra, MIDC (Pune), Engineering cluster (Chinchwad) and Laghu Udyog Bharati (Pune)”, informed Ajinkya Huddar of the Rotary Club Gandhi Bhavan Pune,
Rotary Club of Gandhi Bhavan, Pune is planning to make this social cause and develop this as an annual event: “Green Factory” to spread awareness and promote eco-friendly practices. The goal is to highlight success stories from the manufacturing community, particularly from SMEs, in order to inspire and motivate others to follow in their footsteps. “The environment is calling and we are taking this great initiative to celebrate Environment Day. You can also join this social cause to bring a revolutionary change”, added Keshav Tamhankar.
“With the response we are getting across the state, we are going to make it an annual event, bringing all the stakeholders in society bear equal responsibility and that there is an urgent need to work toward a cleaner and better environment. Manufacturers that are implementing Green Practices by developing new technologies are not only benefiting the environment but also helping in increasing business and improving the economy. Manufacturers can see good growth in business and it also boosts motivation, morale and public relations among the people”, concluded Keshav Tamhankar.
