The frontline workers are doing their best to save lives amid the outbreak of COVID19 in India. Many cases of healthcare workers catching the infection while working in hospitals. This issue was identified by the Pune-based start-up JClean Weather Tech Pvt. Ltd. They developed the negative ion generator titled Scitech Airon, which helps to control the virus, bacteria, and fungal infections in a closed environment. It can also clean up the air and disinfect areas that are exposed to the infection through COVID19 positive cases and suspects.

The start-up is an incubatee company of Scitech Park and the technology is developed under the NIDHI PRAYAS program initiated by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Director of operations at JClean Weather Tech, Amar Patil while talking about the product said, “This product will ensure the wellbeing of the staff, doctors, and nurses who are working around continuously in the quarantine facilities.” While talking about the benefits of the product Patil said that it is cost-effective and does not generate Ozone like other negative ion generators.

The product was originally developed for air purification purposes and Patil informed that DR. DB Jadhav who was a senior scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and Director of Scitech Park and biologist Dr. Rajendra Jagdale is the principal innovator behind this product. Currently, DST has released the funds of 1 crore to manufacture and scale up the product, and 1000 of them will soon be ready for installation in various hospitals in Maharashtra.

On 20th March Scitech Park provided four ‘Scitech Airon – Negative Ion Generator’ machines to Naidu Hospital where the first quarantine facility in Pune was created. The project has been supported by Finolex Pipes and their CSR partner Mukul Madhav Foundation under their CSR activity.

How does SciTech Airon Work?

The technology uses the detergent property generated by the ion generator for the breakdown of the outer protein of the allergens, viruses, and bacteria, thereby controlling airborne diseases to some extent. In addition to this, it increases the body's resistance to infections and harmful environmental factors and this resistance could be helpful for the next 20-30 days outside the ion atmosphere. With its ability to decompose gaseous pollutants like Carbon Monoxide (1000 times more harmful than Carbon dioxide), Nitrogen dioxide, and Volatile Organic Compounds it reduces indoor pollution.

The SciTech Airon ionizer machine generates negatively charged ions at approx. hundred million per 8 seconds (10 ions per sec). These negative ions generated by the ionizer form clusters around micro-particles such as airborne mold, corona or influenza viruses, mite allergens, bacteria, pollens, dust, and so on. It renders the culprits inactive through a chemical reaction by creating highly reactive OH groups called hydroxyl radicals and HO which are known as atmospheric detergents.

The efficacy of the Ion generator has also been observed on different types of pathogens like the Influenza virus, Coxsackie virus, Poliovirus, and Human Coronavirus, a range of allergens, bacteria, and fungi. It could also be useful against floating viruses in the air on public transport, train stations, or airports, or especially within a confined space like a plane cabin, house, hospital ward, and so on.
