In the face of reports of a declining economy and large-scale unemployment in the country, the agriculture sector provides a much-needed respite. Even though the economy has been aggressively struck by the pandemic, the agricultural sector seems to be the least affected. As per future estimations, India’s GDP is set to decline further by the end of 2020, whereas agriculture will see a rise of 2.5% in terms of growth.

The agricultural powerhouse of the world, India has the responsibility of building an environment that helps in the development and rise of rural India, which constitutes two-thirds of the country’s current population. Urbanization has led to a progressive process of inclusivity for the industrial and the services sectors but rural India is still at large and will continue to be a major part of the country even after 2050, according to a recent projection. With nearly three-quarters of rural families dependent on agriculture for survival, it is imperative that an uninterrupted supply of affordable power be made to rural industries.

The big stumbling block to renewable energy development in India is basically ‘storage’. If we’re able to resolve this issue of storage, the uptake of renewable energy will be very fast.

The need for renewable energy, being one of the most debated topics of the year, needs to be addressed more in order to provide the rural economy with a competent energy infrastructure that readily transforms into the use of renewable energy from fossils. Energy storage systems are an effective way of meeting the goal of sustainable renewable energy; they play a significant role in supporting a continuous demand for energy in various sectors.

Strategic Investments in Energy Storage Systems

For the purpose of a meticulous discussion about the investments being made by India in energy storage systems, Underwater Laboratories, a global safety science organisation, is bringing together a league of prominent panelists with the cooperation of WRI India, a renowned research organisation in a webinar on 22nd September 2020 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The discussion will largely focus on policy-related regulations and technological advancements in the field of sustainability.

Moderated by Dr. O P Agarwal, CEO of WRI India, the webinar will have Jayesh Ranjan, IAS, Industry and Commerce Secretary, Govt. of Telangana, Dr. Tom Chapin, Vice President – Research, Underwriters Laboratories, Reji Kumar Pillai, President, India Smart Grid Forum, Rajnath Ram, Advisor, Niti Aayog, Ruchir Shukla, Director, Electric Mobility, Shakti Foundation, and  Aparna Mangla, Regional Manager, Shell Foundation in the panel.

The panel will also discuss the various safety parameters that need to be introduced as we move towards renewable energy, incorporating energy storage systems in business models, the development of energy storage for the growth of the rural economy, and how to prioritize energy access over other areas of development.
