Solar Energy Society of India (SESI) the apex body of the Solar industry in India is all set to start its new year with a novel program, inspire youngsters to innovate and embrace solar energy, the future, and source of renewable clean energy. On 1st January 2021, SESI is organizing a virtual program to felicitate student & innovator Vinisha Umashankar from Tamil Nadu, a 14-year-old studying in 9th grade at a private school in Tiruvannamalai.
Vinisha invented a solar ironing cart, which got her to win the prestigious Children’s Climate Prize. Dr. Chetan Singh Solanki, the IIT Bombay Professor who is on an 11 year On the Road mission with Energy Swaraj Yatra will do the honor of felicitating Vinisha in the virtual program in the august presence of Prafulla Pathak, President, SESI, and Dr. Ashish Malik, Secretary-General, SESI.
“We want to begin this new year with a clear message. Creating awareness about the use and relevance of solar energy among the future generation of our country is critical, and SESI will take every opportunity to achieve this goal”, says Prafulla Pathak, President, SESI. During 2020 SESI organised many webinars reaching out to different segments – the general public, industries, campuses across India, inspiring many to embrace solar energy. This year SESI is planning to organise a series of webinar on young achievers and innovators of solar energy. “Not just engineering students, we want every youngster in the country to be part of the solar movement, and take this opportunity to invite them to join with SESI Students Chapter”, added Mr. Pathak.
Vinisha Umashankar received many awards for making the mobile ironing cart using solar panels for powering a steam iron box instead of conventional charcoal. She also won Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam IGNITE Award 2019 for innovation. She also has been nominated for the ‘Rashtriya Bal Shakti Puraskar 2021’, the highest civilian award in our country for non-adults. Her illustrious innovation list extends beyond the solar ironing cart. She had made a smart ceiling fan, which can be operated via motion sensors. She had won the Dr Pradeep P Thevanoor Innovation Award 2019 for it, in the Best Woman innovator category.
The program will start with opening remarks by Mr. Pathak, followed by a presentation by Vinisha about her innovation. Dr. Chetan Singh Solanki, an eminent figure in the field of energy access, energy sustainability, and climate change, popularly known as Solar Gandhi of India will felicitate Vinisha. Dr. Solanki, who coined the term, Energy Swaraj, has been working tirelessly to establish Energy Swaraj and to layout localised solar energy solutions across the world by creating solar PV technologies and products. He will talk about his current Energy Swaraj Yatra addressing the participants today.
A Solar Lantern from Energy Swaraj Foundation will be presented to Vinisha Umashankar by Dr. Chetan Singh Solanki during the program. D. Ashish Malik, Secretary-General of SESI will conclude the session with a vote of thanks. The program will be broadcasted live over the official Youtube channel of SESI.
