Bikash Jha, Co-Founder & Director of Feukem India Pvt Ltd, sheds light on the company’s journey and its pioneering role in bringing cutting-edge technology to the construction sector. “Feukem, the name, may sound like an MNC, but we take immense pride in being a homegrown company, contributing locally made products to our customers,” states Bikash. Specializing in providing 2-4 hours of fire ratings to structures, Feukem addresses the critical demand in the construction industry for robust fire protection. The primary objective is not only to safeguard lives but also to ensure the structural integrity of buildings. Bikash along with his partner, Abhay Singh, has developed this technology after gaining insights from France and Germany, demonstrating their determination to bring global best practices to the Indian market.
Originally hailing from the air conditioning and refrigeration background, Feukem began its journey with fire coating on air conditioning ducts. The company later expanded its focus to the construction industry, targeting steel structures, doors, and ducts as key service areas. Recognizing a gap in the market for Indian players delivering quality, standards, and certifications in the steel structure domain, Feukem stepped in to fill that void. Reflecting on the inception of the company, Bikash shares that the idea took root during their time in France. After conducting preliminary research, they identified a lack of ‘Make in India’ companies offering such services for the construction industry. Inspired to contribute to the nation, they returned from France, leaving established platforms, to embark on this entrepreneurial journey.

Abhay Singh, co-founder and Director of Feukem, emphasizes that there were no potential Indian companies providing passive fire protection coatings, a crucial component in the steel construction industry. “Most Indian companies, previously, depended on MNCs for these products, leading to limitations in product dispatch and availability,”, comments Abhay. The initial foray into this segment faced skepticism and rejection from industry players, making it challenging for Feukem to establish the authenticity, quality, and certifications of its products as per international standards.
Acknowledging the ongoing struggles, Abhay states that perfection is multidimensional and that they continue to strive for excellence. One notable turning point for Feukem was gaining recognition from eminent clients like ONGC and The Airport Authority of India. The acceptance of their technology by such reputable entities served as validation of their worth. In terms of qualifications, Abhay attributes their academic backgrounds as significant contributors to the development of their products. With a master’s in Industrial Engineering from IIT, Roorkee, Abhay’s thesis focused on passive fire protection while Bikash, a Mechanical Engineer from IIT Delhi, further complements their academic foundation into a robust professional character.
Fire coating stands as Feukem’s main product, with additional offerings such as specialized marine coatings and various anti-corrosion coatings for off-store structures in coastal areas, meeting international standards. The company’s primary focus remains on fire protection coatings, but customer demands have led to expansions into primers and PU. Feukem’s fire coatings come in different variants, including water-based and epoxy-based options. The choice depends on the severity of the expected fire, with water-based coatings suitable for cellulosic fires and epoxy-based coatings for hydrocarbon fires. The company proudly shares its achievement as the first ‘Make in India’ company to receive a UL certificate for its Water-based intumescent coating, Epoxy-based intumescent coating, and vermiculites.
Feukem has also become the first ‘Make in India’ company to supply its fireproof coatings for projects in Turkey and the Istanbul Metro station. This UL certification positions Feukem for future collaborations with more MNCs, marking a significant stride in the company’s trajectory. Feukem’s journey exemplifies how a homegrown initiative can not only fill market gaps but also compete at an international level, contributing to India’s self-sufficiency in critical sectors. As Feukem continues to make strides in passive fire protection systems, it sets a compelling example for the burgeoning landscape of ‘Make in India’ ventures.
