EMO Hannover 2023, the world’s leading trade fair for production technology, will showcase cutting-edge innovations in digitalization and automation solutions, offering European manufacturing companies a platform to address challenges and enhance competitiveness. The event will feature practical examples, including robotics, artificial intelligence, and digital twins, demonstrating the effective integration of these technologies for optimized production processes.
European manufacturing companies face numerous challenges when competing globally, including high energy and personnel costs, shortages of skilled workers, and unstable supply chains. However, these difficulties have also led to remarkable innovations. The smart utilization of digitalization, artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation can significantly enhance productivity and long-term competitiveness. Cutting-edge solutions will be displayed at EMO Hannover 2023, the world’s leading trade fair for production technology. The event will demonstrate practical examples from industry and research, showcasing effective ways to combine these technologies.
Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG from Gosheim considers EMO Hannover 2023 as the key international trade fair for engineering. Their primary focus, along with digitalization, is automation. They offer comprehensive solutions in digital modules like Digital Production, Digital Service, and Digital Operation. These modules work together, providing machine tuning, tool and information management, automation control systems, and remote maintenance capabilities.

Hermle will showcase permanent digitalization and various automation solutions at the fair, including robotics and handling systems for their machining centres. They aim to integrate automation into industries that have yet to adopt these processes, primarily to address the shortage of skilled workers. Schunk GmbH & Co. KG, automation experts based in Germany, presents automated pallet handling as a solution for the manufacturing industry, particularly in machining. With decreasing batch sizes, increased part variance, and a shortage of skilled workers, companies strive to keep their machines operational as long as possible.
Schunk’s automated pallet handling system enables round-the-clock loading, even in small-batch and single-part production, with minimal staffing requirements. The system utilizes palletizer modules and robot coupling for automated loading, with workpieces and clamping devices set up on clamping pallets and loaded onto the machining centre. Schunk will also showcase automation and digitalization options in machining and sustainable and resource-saving clamping equipment at EMO Hannover.
The Kidz project by iwb, in collaboration with Grenzebach Maschinenbau GmbH, focuses on predictive maintenance for feed drives in machine tools. The project aims to implement predictive maintenance even with limited failure observations by combining algorithms and traditional machine tool models. Feed drive failures can be time-consuming and costly, impacting machine dynamics and metal removal rate. Predictive maintenance offers economic potential, but there is a lack of comprehensive systems using existing sensors to monitor and predict the condition of feed drive components. The Kidz project explores a hybrid system that combines a digital twin with AI methods, providing interpretability and specific component assignment. The functionality of the system will be demonstrated using Grenzebach Maschinenbau’s machine.
Fanuc Europe – Fanuc Deutschland GmbH will present two European premieres involving robomachines at EMO Hannover 2023. The company aims to offer complete packages to visitors, such as automotive part manufacturing systems, in addition to their CNC controls and machines. The increasing demand for flexible manufacturing equipment and process solutions in the electric vehicle sector has driven this shift.
Fanuc’s European Development Center in Neuhausen will support the design of solutions based on European standards. The company will also exhibit an “Education cell” consisting of a machine, a robot, and a complete training package, emphasizing the importance of up-to-date equipment for training and nurturing young talent.
EMO Hannover 2023 is a platform for companies to showcase their latest solutions, gather ideas, and forge partnerships to optimize production processes. Companies can gain a significant competitive advantage by effectively integrating automation, robotics, digitalization, digital twins, and artificial intelligence. The trade fair offers a globally unique opportunity for companies to position themselves at the forefront of their industries. Machine Maker, the leading media platform for manufacturing from India, will be covering the show live, bringing out the latest updates from the world’s largest platform of showcasing machining innovations.
