DeburringEXPO 2023 Showcases Cutting-Edge Solutions for Medical and Pharmaceutical Surface Finishing

Whether smooth as glass or with defined roughness – the surfaces of products for medical and pharmaceutical technology have a material influence on their quality and safety

DeburringEXPO, the 5th leading trade fair for deburring technologies and precision surfaces, is set to take place from October 10th to 12th, 2023, at the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre in Germany. With a focus on surface finishing for medical and pharmaceutical technology, the event promises to present new and improved products and services that cater to the ever-increasing demands of the industry.

Medical and pharmaceutical technology demand surfaces of the highest quality and precision. As these sectors work to enhance endoprosthetic products, diagnostic devices, and therapeutic components using advanced materials and manufacturing technologies like additive manufacturing, surface properties play an essential role. Compliance with the European Medical Device Regulation (MDR) has also intensified the need for surface treatment, validation, and quality management of corresponding processes.

In response to these challenges, DeburringEXPO aims to offer a wide range of solutions to meet the quality-critical requirements of medical and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The exhibition will feature a diverse spectrum of technologies, processes, tools, and services for deburring, edge rounding, cleaning, and surface finishing.

Leading companies with extensive experience in the medical and pharmaceutical industries will showcase their offerings. Attendees can explore mechanical deburring with tools, vibratory grinding, brush deburring, and blasting with solid and liquid media. Among the innovative developments, visitors can witness fully automated and production-integrated deburring and simultaneous cleaning using a new technology that employs liquid recycled carbon dioxide as the processing medium.

The event will also highlight specialized technologies such as ultrasonic deburring, flow grinding (pressure flow lapping, abrasive flow machining – AFM), and electrochemical metalworking (ECM). Additionally, the precise electrochemical metalworking (PECM) process will be featured, allowing the production of three-dimensional shapes with exceptional accuracy and surface quality.

The new process for fully automated and production-integrated deburring and simultaneous cleaning with CO2 granules can be used for the processing of cannulas and surgical saws, among other things.

Laser deburring, a method suited for removing fine burrs and flakes on delicate, thin-walled workpieces, will be demonstrated. This technique can even process edges of tiny holes, providing a high level of glossiness without micro-scratches, especially for geometrically complex components produced by additive manufacturing.

Hartmut Herdin, Managing Director of fairXperts GmbH & Co. KG, the private fair organizer, emphasized the importance of cross-industry and cross-material solutions offered by DeburringEXPO. The wide range of technologies on display ensures companies in the medical technology and pharmaceutical industry can find suitable methods to achieve superior surface quality.

Apart from the exhibitor presentations, DeburringEXPO’s framework program includes an expert forum with presentations interpreted simultaneously in German and English. The forum will cover topics like automated deburring, cleaning after deburring, and quality assurance in the deburring process. Visitors can gain valuable insights, optimize processes, and stay updated on the latest industry trends and best practices.

Participation in the expert forum is free of charge, and attendees will receive an updated and expanded brochure titled “Basic Knowledge in deburring technology” in both German and English.

DeburringEXPO 2023 promises to be an invaluable platform for professionals in medical and pharmaceutical technology seeking advanced surface finishing solutions. With its comprehensive range of technologies and expert insights, the trade fair is expected to foster knowledge transfer and support the industry in meeting its demanding surface quality requirements.
