Metastable Materials is an Indian urban mining startup focused on recycling lithium-ion batteries using an innovative, indigenous process. The company’s co-founder and chief operations officer, Saurav Goyal, brings strong technical skills and experience in supply chain consulting to the team. Metastable Materials is committed to reducing the life-cycle cost of lithium-ion batteries and helping to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.
Saurav Goyal’s entrepreneurial journey began with an idea to recycle lithium-ion batteries using an innovative process that he and his close friend Shubham Vishvakarma had developed. Together, they co-founded Metastable Materials, an Indian urban mining startup that aims to provide environmentally friendly metal extraction technology for Li-ion batteries. Saurav’s experience in supply chain consulting and his ability to manage client expectations were instrumental in developing a unique and groundbreaking process that is completely indigenous to India.
Saurav’s journey began when he enrolled in the prestigious IIT Roorkee’s 5-year Integrated M.Tech in Geophysics program in 2014. During his college years, he actively participated in co-curricular activities and student groups, holding multiple key positions across various college groups. He eventually became the Convener of Events at Cognizance ’18 – the Annual Technical Fest of IIT-R – and the Vice President of the Department society, while also volunteering for the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan and Student Mentorship Program.
After completing his education, Saurav joined Bristlecone, an MNC, in June 2019, where he had the opportunity to work closely with a remarkable set of professionals/colleagues who helped him grow massively in his career. Thanks to Bristlecone’s progressive work culture, key traits such as the emphasis on fundamentals and the courage to try out new things got deeply ingrained into Saurav’s personality and daily life. These traits later proved extremely useful for him when working on his own startup – Metastable.
In late-2021, Shubham Vishvakarma approached Saurav with the idea of building a startup to recycle lithium-ion batteries using a groundbreaking process that has been completely designed and developed indigenously. Saurav was intrigued by the idea and convinced by its clear vision of future goals. He joined as the co-founder of Metastable, where he is primarily responsible for building the supply chain of raw material inputs and the sales of finished products, alongside also taking care of accounting, external communications, and compliance, among other strategic areas for the company.
Metastable Materials is committed to providing environmentally friendly metal extraction technology for Li-ion batteries. Their incredible team of engineers and technicians is working tirelessly to achieve this vision. From rethinking the entire urban mining process to setting up sustainable operations, they are trying to reduce the life-cycle cost of lithium-ion batteries to help accelerate the adoption of EVs.
Metastable Materials is helping the manufacturing sector by providing a reliable and sustainable source of lithium-ion batteries. The growing demand for EVs has led to an increased demand for lithium-ion batteries, and traditional mining practices may not be able to keep up. Metastable’s innovative process of recycling lithium-ion batteries provides a solution to this problem by reducing the need for traditional mining practices and providing a sustainable source of raw materials for battery production.
Metastable Materials is also helping to reduce the environmental impact of battery production by using environmentally friendly metal extraction technology. The traditional process of extracting metals from batteries can be hazardous to the environment, but Metastable’s innovative process reduces the environmental impact and helps to create a more sustainable future.
