Guarding its presence in the sectors of solar, wind technologies, hybrid solutions, renewable energy, energy management, and dexterity improvements, Vatsaa Energy has been recognized as one of the groups to offer the floating solar power plant technologies. Working towards a healthy and clean environment has made the company carve its niche in the sector.
Building a clean and green nation, Vatsaa Energy works extensively on the rooftop and land-based solar power plants for residential, commercial and industrial customers. It even works as a consultant in the development of floating solar power plants and solar farm projects with different organisations.
In an exclusive interview with the Machine Maker, the founder and a budding entrepreneur then, Ajay Thomas talks about his entrepreneurial journey and the achievement of Vatsaa Energy.
Sailing young on the path of success
Ideas develop in young minds. Ajay took the saying seriously and developed an idea of manufacturing the floating power plants. But as they say,’ Rome was not built in a day; great ideas take time to frame and design. The path of Vatsaa energy was not a bed of roses for him. In every step, there were hurdles that were difficult to solve but not impossible! During his engineering journey, to fulfil his dreams of making floating power plants, he had been involved in other businesses as well.
From entering the food sector to the electrical sector, Ajay realised that he was capable to manage a business independently which increased his confidence and courage. Incorporated in the year 2015, with the help of funds by Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), the company successfully completed world's first cement concrete based closing solar power plant by September 2015, just 4 months after its initiation.
In the highly liberalized present market situation, Ajay Thomas believes that the competition is high. The company understands the idea of 'Survival of the Fittest' and is trying to continuously improve itself to keep up with the changing pace.
The company stands strong with a vision of spreading the floating solar power plant technologies all over the world and contribute towards low carbon economy initiatives.
Why floating solar power plant?
Ajay Thomas believes that using fertile land for building a solar power plant is not a sustainable model. The land is a limited resource and that should be managed in the most intelligent manner. If we utilise the water surface for solar power plant applications, it will save a large amount of land and vegetation.
When the water surface is covered with solar panels, the water evaporation losses can be reduced by 60-70 %. Over the water surface, solar modules will get natural cooling and this will increase the overall energy generation up to 11%.
No challenge is big with a firm and positive approach
Every start-up encounters some challenges. So did Vatsaa Energy and Ajay Thomas. Issues of lack of funds, lack of machines and skilled labour did not break their will to proceed in the journey. They also overcame many technical challenges working collectively as a team.
India on the right path
With different advances happening in a different sector, India is gradually progressing towards becoming manufacturing. Ajay on a floating power plant in India speaks, “Many of our states are suffering a lot due to lack of fresh water. Interstate court fights on river water sharing is common here. In such a nation, reducing evaporation loss by 60-70% is not a small thing. In highly populated states, a reduction in the consumption of land for power plant applications is not a small thing.
And of course, 11% more power output than the conventional solar power plant is not a small figure.”
Serving the clients in the ASEAN regions, the company is in the process of expanding its wings globally while introducing new and innovative renewable energy products which can revolutionize the industry.
‘Vatsaa is a part of me and can never be isolated’
Ajay Thomas is an electrical and electronics engineer who is currently pursuing his MBA degree and has already achieved a lot in his life till date. He exclaims that Vatsaa has been an important part of his life and it can never be separated from him. He has put in a lot to make it achieve a height it is onto now.
