Zydus Lifesciences Limited has launched REVAHALE™ (revefenacin), a once-daily nebulised long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) for the maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Zydus said REVAHALE™ is the first once-daily nebulised LAMA available in India, providing another maintenance treatment option for COPD patients who require or prefer nebulised therapy.
The medicine is designed to provide sustained bronchodilation for up to 24 hours following once-daily administration. It is compatible with standard jet nebulisers, allowing patients to receive treatment without relying on the inhalation technique required by many handheld inhaler devices.
COPD is a chronic respiratory condition that can cause persistent breathing difficulties and reduced lung function. Treatment often involves inhaled medicines that help open the airways and improve breathing. However, some patients can face difficulties using handheld inhalers effectively.
Elderly patients, people with severe breathlessness and patients with limitations affecting coordination or cognitive function may find it difficult to use certain inhaler devices. Some patients may also be unable to generate enough inspiratory flow to deliver medicines effectively through particular inhaler systems.
Zydus said REVAHALE™ has been developed to address some of these challenges by providing a nebulised delivery option. The treatment can be administered using a standard jet nebuliser, reducing reliance on inhaler technique and the need for high inspiratory effort.
Revefenacin is designed to provide sustained airway relaxation over a 24-hour period through once-daily dosing. Clinical studies have reported significant and sustained improvements in lung function among patients with moderate to very severe COPD. The medicine’s lung-selective action is intended to provide bronchodilation in the airways while limiting systemic exposure. Zydus said the therapy has demonstrated a favourable safety profile in clinical studies. The launch combines three key features: once-daily dosing, nebulised administration and sustained 24-hour bronchodilation. The company said this combination could provide greater flexibility for physicians and patients managing long-term COPD treatment.
Zydus Lifesciences is an innovation-driven global healthcare company involved in the discovery, development, manufacture and marketing of medicines and healthcare products. The group employs more than 30,000 people worldwide, including around 1,500 scientists involved in research and development.
The company has developed and introduced products across several therapeutic areas, including vaccines, therapeutics, biological products and new chemical entities. Zydus said the launch of REVAHALE™ adds to its respiratory care portfolio and reflects its focus on developing treatment options for patients with unmet healthcare needs.
With COPD requiring long-term management and consistent maintenance therapy, the availability of a once-daily nebulised LAMA provides physicians with another option for patients who may face challenges with conventional inhaler-based treatment. The company expects REVAHALE™ to support personalised treatment approaches while improving convenience for eligible COPD patients and their caregivers.
