Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science & Technology Co, Ltd has earned recognition for its customer-focused engineering after a specially developed 21-ton crawler hydraulic excavator designed for Middle Eastern operating conditions received the Outstanding Flagship Product Award at the company’s Seventh Science and Technology Innovation Conference.
The excavator was developed by a research team led by Wu Baoshuo, Deputy Director of the Medium and Large Excavator Research Institute at Zoomlion Earthmoving Machinery Company. Created specifically for demanding applications across the Middle East, the machine is engineered to perform reliably in extreme temperatures, heavy dust conditions and prolonged hydraulic breaker operations commonly encountered in municipal construction, mining and infrastructure projects.
Unlike conventional excavators, the new model was designed to withstand ambient temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius while maintaining high productivity during continuous breaker work, which can account for more than 70 percent of operating time on many regional job sites.
According to Wu Baoshuo, the project focused on addressing real-world customer requirements rather than adapting an existing product. He explained that operating environments in the Middle East present unique engineering challenges, making it essential to develop equipment capable of delivering consistent performance under harsh conditions.
One of the biggest technical hurdles involved managing heat generated during extended hydraulic breaker operations. To overcome this challenge, Zoomlion engineers redesigned the airflow architecture and optimized the cooling system to improve heat dissipation and ensure stable machine performance even under extreme workloads.
The development team also reinforced critical structural components and refined welding processes to enhance durability against repeated impact loads. Additional improvements included an upgraded air intake system and enhanced cabin sealing to minimize dust intrusion and improve equipment reliability in desert environments.
Every stage of development involved extensive field validation at customer worksites across the Middle East. Engineers collected real-time operating data through advanced sensors and conducted thousands of hydraulic breaker cycles to evaluate machine performance and refine the design before commercial production.
The programme brought together specialists from product development, manufacturing, testing, technical support and overseas operations. Zoomlion’s headquarters testing centre further supported the project by conducting three months of intensive durability testing to verify long-term performance.
The engineering team adopted an iterative approach throughout development, using performance data from early prototypes to optimize cooling efficiency and improve overall machine reliability. Each round of testing contributed to further refinements before the excavator entered production. Receiving the Outstanding Flagship Product Award marks an important milestone for the development team and highlights Zoomlion’s emphasis on engineering solutions tailored to customer needs. While celebrating the achievement, Wu Baoshuo noted that the recognition serves as motivation to continue improving equipment performance through close collaboration with customers and ongoing innovation, ensuring future products deliver dependable performance in the world’s most demanding operating environments.
