ZF Wind Power, a business unit of the global technology group ZF, has officially commissioned a 13.2 MW test rig in Coimbatore, marking the largest facility of its kind in India. The new installation is intended to address key technical demands in the wind power sector.
The advanced testing system enables the development and validation of next-generation gearboxes and powertrains, reinforcing ZF’s capabilities in delivering high-performance solutions for wind turbines. Designed to replicate complex and dynamic field conditions, the rig plays a critical role in verifying product durability and operational efficiency under real-world scenarios.
ZF Wind Power’s Coimbatore plant, known for its advanced manufacturing and assembly infrastructure, gains a significant edge with the integration of this dynamic test rig. It allows real-time simulation of torque reversal cycles, a key requirement for customer approvals, insurance evaluations, and certification compliance.
Felix Henseler, CEO of ZF Wind Power, noted that the installation reflects the company’s long-term commitment to supporting India’s wind energy targets. He emphasized ZF’s collaborative approach across the product life cycle—from design to validation.
ZF Group plans further investment in the region, including a cold chamber testing facility to expand testing capabilities. This initiative is aimed at delivering comprehensive end-to-end solutions to meet both global and regional market requirements.
Akash Passey, President of ZF Group India, stated that the test rig enhances ZF’s ability to provide advanced energy solutions and contributes to the broader transition toward renewable energy systems. The facility also aligns with national and international sustainability goals. To date, ZF Wind Power’s operations in India have delivered nearly 60 GW of gearbox capacity from the Coimbatore facility, supplying both domestic and international markets.
