ZF LIFETEC, a global player in passive vehicle safety systems, has inaugurated a new production facility in Morocco dedicated to steering wheel manufacturing. Spanning 8,000 square meters, the site marks a significant step in the company’s strategic expansion across high-growth automotive markets linking Europe and Africa. The facility was officially opened on July 2, 2025.

Operations at the plant are already underway, with approximately 350 employees currently on-site. The new unit serves both local and European markets and brings the total number of ZF LIFETEC locations worldwide to over 50. This expansion reinforces the company’s commitment to being close to its key markets and customers, further solidifying its role as a leading supplier in the passive safety systems sector.

“With our customers and sustainability goals in mind, we aim to shorten supply chains and manufacture as close to end markets as possible. This approach also helps reduce operational risks,” stated Rudolf Stark, CEO of ZF LIFETEC, during the launch event.

The opening ceremony welcomed local officials, public representatives, and partners including stakeholders from Tanger Med Zones (TMZ)—the industrial hub where the plant is located—as well as customers and suppliers. The event highlighted the collaborative efforts that have shaped the development of this new industrial site.

Ahmed Bennis, Managing Director of TMZ, commented: “This project reinforces our strategy to foster long-term partnerships with leading global automotive suppliers. ZF LIFETEC becomes part of a thriving Moroccan automotive ecosystem driven by local content, efficient logistics, and cost-effective operations.”

Rudolf Stark further emphasized Morocco’s suitability for the investment: “The Tanger Med automotive cluster offers excellent infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and close proximity to our clients—making it an ideal site for long-term growth. The steering wheel plays a unique role as the driver’s primary touchpoint with the vehicle, combining comfort and control. Its production requires both high-precision technology and the fine craftsmanship Morocco is known for.”

The new plant is not just a manufacturing site—it symbolizes ZF LIFETEC’s vision for future growth in the steering systems space. It also strengthens the company’s production network across its strategic triangle of locations: O Porriño in Spain, Vila Nova in Portugal, and the Tanger Med platform in Morocco. Together, these sites will contribute significantly to ZF LIFETEC’s position as a leading supplier in the global automotive market.
