German auto component manufacturer ZF has started production of its Electric Park Brake (EPB) system in India, marking its entry into the country’s passenger vehicle market with this technology. The EPB units will be used in a newly introduced electric vehicle platform developed by a domestic automaker.

This step marks ZF’s first local rollout of its EPB technology for passenger cars in India. Under a long-term supply arrangement, the company will deliver several thousand units over the coming years. The EPB system replaces conventional handbrake levers and cables with an electronically controlled setup.

Designed to reduce mechanical drag, cabin noise, and vibrations, the system is also intended to enhance overall efficiency. Activation is controlled via a dashboard button and is fully integrated with the main braking system.

Key functions of the system include dynamic braking, real-time monitoring of brake pad wear, and two-wheel emergency braking capabilities. The EPB system is adaptable across a range of vehicles—from compact passenger models to light-duty commercial transport.

The move comes as India’s auto industry continues to shift toward electric mobility and advanced safety features. Government initiatives promoting local production and eco-friendly transportation have further encouraged global firms to invest in Indian manufacturing.

ZF supplies components and systems to various segments, including personal vehicles, trucks, and industrial machinery. The company reported €46.6 billion in revenue for 2023 and operates 162 manufacturing sites across 31 countries with nearly 169,000 employees globally. Globally, ZF’s EPB systems are already in use on more than 250 million wheels. The company’s Indian expansion is in line with the country’s “Make in India” push to boost local manufacturing.

Commenting on the development, Akash Passey, President of ZF India, said the new production line reflects ZF’s focus on addressing local automotive needs and supporting Indian manufacturers in building globally competitive vehicles.

ZF Group is a global leader in technology supply for the automotive and industrial sectors. With a reported revenue of €41.4 billion in fiscal 2024, the company operates across 161 production sites in 30 countries and employs approximately 161,600 people worldwide. In India, ZF delivers solutions across autonomous, connected, and electric vehicle technologies for commercial applications.
