Hindustan Zinc Limited, part of the Vedanta Group, will set up the world’s largest zinc smelter facility at Doswada in the Tapi district of Gujarat. The company has signed an MoU with the Government of Gujarat recently, marking also Vedanta’s first investment in the state of Gujarat. It is also one of the largest MoUs signed by the Gujarat government under its new Industrial Policy.
Spread over 415 acres, the 300 KTPA (kilo tonnes per annum) state-of-the-art Zinc smelter plant facility will be equipped with zero discharge technology and will be among the lowest-cost smelters in the world. Located in proximity to the port and key markets, this facility will cater to downstream user industries with zinc and minor metals. The project is expected to entail an investment between 5000 to 10000 crores in phases. The first phase of the project is targeted to be completed by 2022 and will create more than 5000 employment opportunities.

“We will extend all support to ensure that the plant is commissioned in stipulated time. The plant will substantially increase employment and thereby boost the economy in the region,” Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said. Taking the new initiative to the public Hindustan Zinc informed that breaking new grounds has been a legacy for Hindustan Zinc, and proud to announce their partnership with Gujarat Government setting up the state-of-the-art Zinc Smelter Plant at Doswada.

Through this initiative, Hindustan Zinc part of Vedanta Group is committing to their sustainability goals of Zero Harm and Zero Waste, as the new plant will be a zero liquid discharge smelting complex.
