Global technology service provider Wistron has joined hands with the Karnataka state government to establish a laptop manufacturing plant. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Wistron and the Karnataka government outlines a ₹1,500 crore investment, with plans to generate approximately 3,000 job opportunities.

Wistron Corporation, a technology service provider, delivers ICT products, service solutions, and systems to renowned brands worldwide. With headquarters in Taiwan, the company operates located logistical and distribution bases across Asia, Europe, and North America. Wistron also has a strong R&D infrastructure and great product development experience.

The Large and Medium Industries Minister of Karnataka, MB Patil, disclosed that Wistron, has expressed its intention to set up the manufacturing unit in the Bengaluru region. The proposed project, expected to span across 32 acres, awaits the government’s approval for the allocation of the required land. Under the terms of the MoU, Wistron aims to start construction in July 2024, with the goal of initiating laptop production by January 2026.

Mr Patil highlighted the significance of this move, featuring it as the first-ever laptop manufacturing unit in Karnataka. The facility is set to stick to Industry 4.0 standards, having a fully automated infrastructure capable of producing laptops for various brands. Impressively, more than 50% of the laptops manufactured in this unit are anticipated to be exported.

Speaking about the wide impact of the project, Mr Patil stressed that this aim goes beyond just electronics production. Instead, it represents a commitment to boost innovation, creating job opportunities, and positioning Karnataka as a leader in the rapidly evolving electronics manufacturing industry.

A key aspect of Wistron’s plan involves diversification beyond laptops. The facility will also produce Internet of Things (IoT) components and parts related to electric vehicles (EVs). This expansion into emerging technologies aligns with the global trend towards smart and interconnected devices.

Alec Lai, President of Global Manufacturing at Wistron, expressed excitement for the collaboration, highlighting the strategic importance of Karnataka in the company’s expansion plans. Dennis Hung, Senior Director, Rachael Lu, General Manager, Sudhir C, Manager of Wistron Corp, S Selvakumar, Principal Secretary, and Gunjan Krishna, Department of Industries, were all present during the signing of the MoU, enhancing the importance of the partnership.
