VA TECH WABAG (WABAG), a leading multinational water technology company, has secured a major Design, Build and Operate (DBO) contract from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) for the development of two sewage treatment plants and a tertiary treatment facility in Bengaluru. The project will strengthen the city’s wastewater treatment infrastructure while promoting sustainable water management and renewable energy generation.
The contract covers the construction of a 100 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Byramangala, a 60 MLD STP at Bellandur, and a 25 MLD Tertiary Treatment Plant (TTP) at Byramangala. The scope of work includes design, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the facilities, along with the installation of biogas-based captive power generation systems to improve energy efficiency.
The sewage treatment plants will be developed using the Activated Sludge Process integrated with a Biological Nutrient Removal system, enabling effective wastewater treatment while meeting stringent environmental standards. The tertiary treatment plant at Byramangala will use ultrafiltration technology to produce high-quality treated water suitable for discharge into nearby water bodies, supporting water conservation and reuse.
WABAG has previously completed the first phase of the Bellandur sewage treatment project and has now been entrusted with the second phase, reflecting the confidence placed in the company’s technical capabilities and project execution expertise. The engineering, procurement and construction phase of the project is scheduled to be completed within 36 months. Following commissioning, WABAG will operate and maintain the facilities for seven years, ensuring reliable performance, efficient plant operations and long-term asset management.
The new treatment facilities are expected to play a significant role in enhancing Bengaluru’s wastewater management capacity as the city continues to expand rapidly. By improving sewage treatment infrastructure, the project will help address increasing wastewater volumes while supporting cleaner water resources and improved environmental outcomes.
A key feature of the project is the integration of anaerobic sludge digestion with biogas-based power generation. This approach will convert sludge into renewable energy, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower operating costs and improve the overall energy efficiency of the plants. The project also supports resource recovery by transforming waste into valuable energy, contributing to circular economy objectives.
Commenting on the development, S Natrajan, Vice President and Head – Sales and Marketing, India Cluster, said the contract further strengthens WABAG’s leadership in India’s municipal wastewater treatment sector. He noted that the energy-efficient facilities will enhance Bengaluru’s sewage treatment capacity while supporting environmentally responsible wastewater management, renewable energy generation and Karnataka’s long-term water security goals.
