Volvo Trucks has launched a groundbreaking new feature in its I-Roll technology—a stop-start engine function, marking a world-first for the heavy-duty truck sector. This innovative addition is designed to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, furthering Volvo’s efforts to lower the environmental impact and operational costs of transportation.
Built on the company’s existing I-See and I-Roll systems, the new stop-start functionality continuously monitors road data and terrain. When a downward slope is detected, the engine automatically shuts off temporarily. During this time, no fuel is consumed, and CO2 emissions are completely eliminated.
“Our engineering team has once again delivered a game-changing innovation that will enhance fuel efficiency for trucks,” said Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks. “This is a key part of our decarbonization strategy, and we will continue to push the boundaries to make our combustion engines even more sustainable.”
The stop-start system activates when speeds exceed 60 kph. Depending on factors like topography and external temperature, this feature can cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to one percent in addition to the savings already provided by Volvo’s existing technologies.
The new feature will be available on the Volvo FH and FH Aero models equipped with a 13-liter diesel engine, with orders opening in September 2025. Volvo Trucks’ decarbonization strategy includes not only enhanced combustion engines running on renewable fuels but also the development of battery-electric and hydrogen-powered fuel-cell trucks.
