Volvo Trucks is expanding its road safety outreach across Southeast Asia — a region where traffic accidents claim more than 120,000 lives each year, representing close to 15% of global road fatalities. Children, pedestrians, and motorcyclists are among the most at risk.
In recent years, countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines have launched national road safety campaigns. These include public education sessions, school programs, and tighter traffic law enforcement. During these periods, some countries have seen road injuries drop by 5–10%.
Volvo Trucks is actively supporting these efforts with two hands-on safety programs aimed at raising awareness among both kids and adults. One of them, “Stop, Look, Wave”, is run in partnership with schools and teaches children a simple three-step habit: stop at the curb, look both ways, and wave to the driver before crossing. In 2024–2025, more than 30,000 children participated in the program, with noticeable improvements in safe crossing behavior.
The second, “See and Be Seen”, highlights the importance of visibility around large vehicles. It helps people understand where truck blind spots are and how to stay safe near heavy traffic. This program is aimed at both school-age children and adults. These road safety campaigns have recently been extended to Japan and Brunei, underlining Volvo’s commitment to improving safety not just for truck drivers, but for everyone on the road.
“At Volvo Trucks, safety means looking out for everyone — not just those inside our vehicles,” said Anna Engblom, Managing Director for Southeast Asia & Japan. “We know that technology plays a part, but real progress also depends on education, awareness, and working together with communities. Our goal is to eliminate accidents involving our trucks, and that means doing more than just meeting regulations.”
Volvo’s long-term vision is to reach zero accidents involving its vehicles. With over a million road deaths reported worldwide every year, the company believes the solution lies in combining smart technology with better driver training and public engagement.
