Volvo Trucks India has begun its LNG (liquefied natural gas) journey by delivering 20 LNG-powered heavy-duty trucks to Delhivery, a logistics service provider. These trucks will join Delhivery’s existing fleet of Volvo diesel trucks.
Volvo’s LNG trucks use HPDI (high-powered direct injection) technology, which improves fuel economy by 15-20% and lowers emissions compared to other LNG trucks. These trucks perform as well as diesel engines in terms of torque and efficiency.
Volvo Trucks is working to build an LNG transportation ecosystem in India, collaborating with regulatory authorities and companies like Indian Oil Corporation and Mahanagar Gas to ensure LNG filling stations are available along truck routes.
LNG offers cost and environmental benefits, being 10% cheaper than diesel and producing 20% less CO2 emissions. Volvo’s LNG trucks are also compatible with BioLNG, which can reduce CO2 emissions by 100%.
Hanna Ljungqvist, Head of Market India & Indonesia at Volvo Trucks, sees India as a key growth market, noting the country’s rapidly developing road infrastructure. Globally, Volvo has sold over 7,500 LNG trucks, with Europe being a significant market.
