V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in Tamil Nadu has announced a massive ₹41,860 crore investment plan to establish itself as India’s premier hub for green hydrogen and ammonia production, according to a senior official. By December 19, 2024, the port had handled 29.70 million tonnes of cargo, including 5.62 lakh TEUs of containers, reflecting growth rates of 1.87% and 6.74% respectively.
To boost its cargo capacity and operational efficiency, the port has launched several strategic initiatives. As part of its green energy mission, 501 acres of land have been allocated to four companies for developing green hydrogen and ammonia production and storage facilities. A pilot project demonstrating hydrogen production, storage, and power generation using fuel cells is currently underway and is expected to be completed by January 2025.
VOC Port Chairperson Susanta Kumar Purohit highlighted the port’s strategic advantages, including its status as an all-weather facility, proximity to the East-West international shipping route, minimal container ship turnaround time, and robust rail and road connectivity. These factors, combined with capacity expansion projects, position VOC Port as a key gateway for South India.
The port is also advancing its green hydrogen initiatives with a pilot bunkering project to showcase refuelling and bunkering capabilities for hydrogen and its derivatives. Additionally, plans are in place to widen the entrance channel from 152.40 meters to 230 meters, enabling better handling of larger vessels. The construction of Berth 10, with a 440-meter length, is planned at an estimated cost of ₹80 crore. Infrastructure upgrades for handling smaller oil tankers, approximately 120 meters in length, are expected to be completed by mid-2025.
These developments are part of VOC Port’s broader strategy to enhance cargo handling, strengthen market share, and align with India’s green energy goals. V. O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, located in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, is one of India’s premier ports and a vital gateway for trade and commerce.
