Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) in Visakhapatnam has positioned the city as a leading hub for artificial limbs, continuing India’s tradition of delivering affordable and transformative medical solutions. From the renowned Jaipur Foot to the advanced “Vizag Hand,” myoelectric and bionic upper limbs, solar-powered wheelchairs, and low-cost prosthetic joints, AMTZ has expanded access to innovative assistive technologies.
Designed to restore mobility and confidence for individuals with upper limb amputations, the cutting-edge bionic “Vizag Hand” recently enabled a woman from Visakhapatnam, who lost her arm in an accident, to regain independence and dignity. Thousands of beneficiaries across the country have already received artificial limbs developed at AMTZ.
During a recent visit, the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India personally presented artificial legs to recipients, while the Commander-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command handed over a myoelectric arm during a joint congress on emergency surgery. Dr Jitendra Sharma, MD and Founder CEO of AMTZ, highlighted that the “Vizag Hand” represents not just a prosthetic, but a symbol of resilience and dignity.
The Assistive Technology Centre at AMTZ, supported by ICMR, New Delhi, integrates research, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing to deliver customized solutions for underserved communities. Collaborations with Divyanjan groups nationwide are bridging the gap between beneficiaries and advanced prosthetic technologies. Under the leadership of Amit Sharma, AMTZ has become a beacon of hope, ensuring access to life-changing artificial limbs and assistive devices for those in need.
The Andhra Pradesh Medtech Zone (AMTZ) is India’s first dedicated medical technology park, located in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Established to reduce the country’s dependence on imports of medical devices, AMTZ provides world-class infrastructure, research facilities, and manufacturing units to promote indigenous production of healthcare equipment. Spread over 270 acres, it houses specialized laboratories, testing centers, prototyping facilities, and incubation hubs to support startups and established companies alike. By offering shared resources and cutting-edge technology at affordable costs, AMTZ fosters innovation, accelerates product development, and strengthens India’s healthcare ecosystem, aligning with the vision of making the nation self-reliant in medical technology.
