On World Environment Day, Vedanta Limited, India’s leading producer of transition metals and critical minerals, announced that it has raised its renewable energy round-the-clock capacity to 1.03 GW through new power delivery agreements. The company is now on track to achieve its goal of 2.5 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 as part of its broader commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.
The projects, which include a mix of wind, solar, and pumped storage technologies, are expected to reduce over 6 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually—equivalent to the carbon sequestration of nearly 350 million trees each year. As the largest producer of energy transition metals and critical minerals in India, Vedanta plays a vital role in supporting the global shift towards renewable energy.
With an annual production capacity of over 4.5 million tonnes of materials like aluminium, zinc, copper, and nickel, the company’s products are crucial for the infrastructure needed for renewable energy, electric vehicles, and cutting-edge technologies. Vedanta’s focus on low-carbon products, including aluminium and zinc lines like Restora and EcoZen, is a key part of India’s push towards clean energy solutions.
Vedanta’s decarbonization efforts are driven by four key strategies: scaling up renewable energy, switching to low-carbon fuels, improving energy and process efficiency, and implementing carbon offsets. The company is currently running over 350 high-impact environmental initiatives across its business units.
Notable achievements include the utilization of 2.61 billion units of renewable energy, the deployment of lithium-ion forklifts and LNG-powered trucks, and the establishment of India’s largest torrefied bio-pellet manufacturing facility in Punjab. Additionally, Vedanta has planted nearly 3 million trees since 2021 as part of the World Economic Forum’s 1 Trillion Trees initiative.
In celebration of World Environment Day, Vedanta launched a large-scale plantation drive across multiple states, including Rajasthan, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Goa. The company also hosted a series of activities like quizzes, drawing contests, sapling distributions, and eco-friendly cricket tournaments to promote environmental awareness among its stakeholders.
Vedanta’s commitment to sustainability has earned it a B rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for its strong water security and climate change initiatives. Additionally, the company’s aluminium and zinc products have earned Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), providing transparent data on their environmental impact.
