Vedanta Aluminium’s Healthcare Initiatives Benefit Around 4 Lakh People

On the occasion of World Health Day, Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, has announced its efforts to benefit approximately 400,000 individuals in Odisha and Chhattisgarh through community health programs in the fiscal year 2024. The company has been actively involved in providing high-quality health services to its communities, promoting preventive healthcare practices, and delivering quality curative healthcare services to the local population.

Aligned with this year’s theme, “My health, my right,” Vedanta Aluminium is empowering individuals to advocate for the right of everyone, everywhere, to access quality health services, education, and information, especially in underserved and remote areas. Vedanta Aluminium has implemented various initiatives across its operations. In Jharsuguda, Odisha, where the company’s mega aluminium plant is located, it conducted extensive drives using mobile healthcare units and distributed informative leaflets in nearly 30 villages to raise awareness about adopting healthier lifestyles.

Additionally, a pilot breast cancer screening camp was organized at the Vedanta Aluminium-supported Jharsuguda Diagnostic Centre, one of the largest multi-facility diagnostic centers in Odisha. In Lanjigarh, home to its world-class alumina refinery, Vedanta Aluminium organized a multi-specialty mega health camp that provided free healthcare services such as medical consultations, screening tests, medications, and vaccinations to over 500 individuals. Furthermore, a week-long awareness drive on health and hygiene practices was conducted across 20 villages, benefiting approximately 1,000 residents, along with a blood donation camp.

In Korba, Chhattisgarh, Vedanta Aluminium initiated a drive to distribute assistive devices to the elderly and specially-abled persons, aiming to create a more inclusive and supportive community. The distribution included walking sticks, tripods, crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs. Additionally, the company organized two multi-specialty mega health camps in Bhadrapara and Belakachar, benefiting around 500 community members with specialized healthcare services and diagnostic tests for diabetes and blood pressure.

At its port operations at Vizag General Cargo Berth (VGCB), Vedanta Aluminium conducted a two-day eye check-up camp where approximately 400 people underwent comprehensive eye examinations to detect vision impairment and other ocular conditions. Free spectacles were distributed to address vision impairment among the patients. Moreover, the unit provided essential support to people with special needs from marginalized communities, including battery-operated wheelchairs, tricycles, wheelchair riders, commode wheelchairs, and tripod walk sticks, aiming to enhance their mobility and independence.

Vedanta Aluminium extends a wide range of essential and specialized healthcare services to underserved communities in Odisha and Chhattisgarh, covering areas within and around its operational sites. These efforts complement the existing healthcare infrastructure in the region and include Mobile Health Units. Vedanta Aluminium operates Mobile Health Units to provide primary healthcare services to communities that are often hard to reach or far from government healthcare facilities. These units offer doorstep healthcare services every week of the year according to a predetermined schedule. The company also provides round-the-clock ambulance services for seamless referrals.

Vedanta Limited Lanjigarh established a 20-bed Multi-Speciality Hospital in Lanjigarh, Kalahandi in 2010. The hospital is staffed with a team of skilled doctors, physiotherapists, and visiting specialists. It provides preventive and curative healthcare services free of charge to the neighboring community of Kalahandi and Rayagada district, with a focus on serving the underprivileged. Through its Nand Ghars, which are modern anganwadis acting as centers for women and child development, Vedanta Aluminium provides quality healthcare and proper nutrition to young children, pregnant women, and new mothers.

Two advanced diagnostic centers in Jharsuguda and Laikera offer a comprehensive range of Radiology and Pathology services, including MRI and CT scanning facilities. These centers contribute to improved healthcare delivery and diagnosis in the region, offering services at nominal charges aligned with the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) rates. Project Arogya provides high-quality primary healthcare services, focusing on both preventive and curative measures through rural health posts.

Special emphasis is placed on maternal and child health, with a focus on combating malnutrition and anemia. The initiative also conducts awareness campaigns on HIV, Tuberculosis (TB), and substance de-addiction. In Chhattisgarh, Vedanta’s Nayi Kiran project raises awareness about menstrual health and hygiene, builds capacity for manufacturing sanitary products, and develops local champions of menstrual health. The project has sensitized over 57,000 community members about menstruation.

BALCO Hospital offers 120 beds and a skilled medical team of specialists. It features state-of-the-art facilities, including a fully equipped Modular OT, a cutting-edge CT scan room, an advanced X-ray room, and an emergency and critical care unit, meeting the healthcare needs of the community. As an ISO 9001-2015 certified facility, the hospital maintains robust quality management systems and receives a yearly footfall of more than 1.8 lakh people from the communities.

BMC is a 170-bed, state-of-the-art tertiary care Oncology facility in Naya Raipur.
