Vedanta Aluminium, India’s leading aluminium producer, has received multiple awards at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) National Energy Efficiency Circle Competition 2024 for its commitment to energy efficiency at its alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha. The refinery won the top prize in the ‘Best Energy Efficient Designated Consumer (under BEE-PAT scheme)’ category and received special recognition in ‘Best Energy Efficient Organization (Large Sector)’ and ‘Best Managed Electrical System for Energy Efficiency.’ These awards highlight Vedanta Aluminium’s dedication to sustainable business practices.
The Lanjigarh refinery produces high-quality alumina, which is further processed into aluminium at facilities in Jharsuguda, Odisha, and Korba, Chhattisgarh. The plant is currently engaged in over 29 energy efficiency projects aimed at supporting Vedanta’s goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. Notable projects include upgrades to the power distribution system, improvements in the bauxite digestion process, and the use of biomass briquettes for power generation. These initiatives have notably reduced energy consumption and cut CO2 emissions by more than 69,000 tonnes in FY 2024 alone.
John Slaven, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, praised the recognition, stating, “These accolades affirm our commitment to sustainable operations and achieving Net Zero goals. We thank CII for acknowledging our efforts and encouraging us to set higher standards in responsible operations.”
The CII National Energy Efficiency Circle Competition, with this year’s theme “Powering the Net Zero Goals,” recognizes top practices in energy efficiency and renewable energy among over 500 participating organizations. The event also highlights contributions under the BEE-PAT scheme, governed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, which oversees energy consumption regulations for major industries.
