Vedanta Aluminium, India’s top aluminium producer, marked Earth Day 2025 by showcasing progress in environmental stewardship, circular economy initiatives, and clean energy efforts. The company’s actions reflect its ongoing commitment to integrating sustainability into its operations while fostering development in neighboring communities.

A standout achievement this year was the dispatch of the 650th fly ash rake from its Jharsuguda facility. Since March 2022, Vedanta has delivered over 1.5 million tonnes of fly ash to cement manufacturers and 3 million tonnes for National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) infrastructure projects. Additionally, 0.3 million tonnes have been supplied to MSMEs for fly ash brick production. In FY25 alone, the company dispatched 223 rakes, achieving a fly ash utilization rate of 113%. All consignments are GPS-tracked, and the health of ash dykes is monitored using drone technology and InSAR systems.

In furthering its green agenda, Vedanta Aluminium has partnered with PwC on biodiversity and carbon reduction programs. As part of the government-led Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign, the company has planted over 100,000 trees through its Matrivan initiative in Jharsuguda. It has also signed an MoU with GAIL to supply natural gas to support operations at its upcoming 430 KTPA cast house.

Vedanta Aluminium organized a series of community-oriented activities across its operational sites in Odisha and Chhattisgarh to mark Earth Day, focusing on raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainable practices. In Lanjigarh, Odisha, approximately 145 residents from Goipeta village took part in awareness campaigns and creative contests. The event also saw the planting of over 15,000 saplings, including 500 specimens of the threatened Chloroxylon swietenia, contributing to local biodiversity. Furthermore, the construction of 31 water harvesting structures added 2.5 lakh cubic meters of water storage capacity, directly benefiting around 250 farmers in the region.

In Jharsuguda, Odisha, Vedanta partnered with the OPMP Government Girls’ School to engage 170 students and faculty members in Earth Day celebrations. Activities included a plantation drive, along with poster-making and debate competitions aimed at fostering environmental consciousness among young learners. These initiatives encouraged students to think critically about ecological issues while actively participating in green efforts on campus.

Meanwhile, in Korba, Chhattisgarh, BALCO—Vedanta Aluminium’s local unit—focused on reinforcing sustainable practices within the organization. The team conducted energy audits and launched behavioral change campaigns to reduce specific power consumption. These efforts aligned closely with the Earth Day 2025 theme, Our Power, Our Planet, highlighting the importance of individual and collective responsibility in driving energy efficiency and environmental protection.

In areas surrounding its mining operations, Vedanta has installed 417 solar-powered streetlights, commissioned 11 solar borewells, and planted over 10,000 saplings on overburden dumps. An additional 1.7 lakh saplings were planted under compensatory afforestation, along with 8,000 more in a newly developed Miyawaki forest.

Reflecting on these efforts, Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, stated:
“Earth Day at Vedanta is more than an annual event—it’s embedded in how we operate every day. Whether it’s sustainable waste reuse, renewable integration, or biodiversity restoration, our focus remains on driving responsible industrial progress with a long-term ecological vision.”

Vedanta Aluminium remains aligned with India’s national climate goals and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with a target of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.
