Vedanta Aluminium, India’s top aluminium manufacturer, has increased the production capacity of its Primary Foundry Alloy (PFA) unit by 120 kilo tonnes per annum at its Special Economic Zone (SEZ) facility in Jharsuguda, Odisha. This move aims to strengthen India’s presence in the global aluminium market, particularly in the automotive and engineering sectors. Vedanta was also the first Indian company to produce and distribute PFAs within the country.
PFAs are essential for creating high-precision automotive components such as engine blocks, alloy wheels, cylinder heads, and transmission housings. Known for their excellent casting properties, durability, and heat conductivity, they are crucial for building fuel-efficient vehicles that meet modern emission standards. Vedanta’s PFAs meet international norms such as BS-VI and CAFE, making them a trusted supplier to major vehicle manufacturers around the world.
This expansion comes at a time when the global PFA industry is growing steadily at a CAGR of 5.8%, while India is advancing faster at 6.5% annually. The trend is driven by rapid developments in the automotive sector, along with rising demand for electric vehicles and lightweight materials. Experts predict that India’s PFA segment will continue to expand at 7% CAGR over the next five years, supported by the Make in India initiative, PLI schemes, and EV-focused policies.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, remarked that this expansion marks a major step in delivering higher value to customers and enhancing India’s role as a leading supplier of advanced aluminium products. He added that the initiative is aligned with national efforts to boost self-reliance in manufacturing. Sunil Gupta, COO, emphasized that broadening their range of value-added offerings not only supports cleaner mobility but also strengthens domestic manufacturing capabilities while cutting import dependence.
The Jharsuguda plant has been upgraded with advanced casting systems from Spain-based Befesa, along with modern technologies for metal treatment, degassing, and vertical chill casting. These upgrades ensure that Vedanta’s alloys consistently meet global standards and can serve markets across Europe, North America, and Asia with confidence.
Sustainability is central to Vedanta’s operations. The company has earned the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Chain of Custody certification, which covers PFAs, billets, wire rods, and its low-carbon aluminium lines—Restora and Restora Ultra. This recognition highlights Vedanta’s commitment to responsible sourcing, ethical practices, and reduced environmental impact—key attributes valued by environmentally conscious buyers worldwide.
Vedanta Aluminium’s capacity expansion is more than a production increase—it reflects a forward-looking strategy centered on innovation, global competitiveness, and sustainable growth in the high-performance alloy segment.
Vedanta Aluminium, a division of Vedanta Limited, is the country’s leading aluminium producer, accounting for over 2.42 million tonnes in FY25—more than half of India’s total output. The company specializes in value-added aluminium solutions that are widely used across core sectors. Ranked second globally in the 2024 S&P Corporate Sustainability Assessment for the aluminium industry, Vedanta operates world-class smelters, refineries, and power facilities in India and is driving the future of aluminium as a key material for sustainable development.
