Varex Imaging Manufacturing India Pvt Ltd, a branch of Varex Imaging Corporation (USA), has inaugurated its second advanced manufacturing plant at the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ). The opening ceremony was attended by Dr Jitendra Sharma, MD and Founder-CEO of AMTZ, Andrew Hartman, Global Senior VP – Detectors at Varex Imaging Corporation, and Vivek Phalle, Senior MD and Country Head of Varex Imaging India.
This new facility marks a significant step in Varex’s ongoing commitment to India’s medical technology sector and supports the country’s goal of becoming a global leader in medical imaging and innovation. The new plant complements the success of Varex’s first manufacturing unit at AMTZ, which currently produces advanced Flat Panel Detectors (FPDs)—critical components in digital X-ray systems. These detectors are essential for diagnostics across radiography, fluoroscopy, and interventional imaging, and local production is helping reduce India’s dependency on imported diagnostic components.
AMTZ leadership has praised the expansion, seeing it as a significant move towards India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative. Dr Jitendra Sharma highlighted the development as a key milestone for enhancing India’s manufacturing capabilities and reinforcing AMTZ’s role as a global hub for MedTech innovation.
The new plant will add two advanced manufacturing lines: India’s first facility for Cesium Iodide (CsI) coating, which improves digital X-ray image quality while minimizing radiation exposure, and another dedicated to producing medical-grade glass tubes used in X-ray and CT imaging systems. The localization of these technologies will enable the country to produce the complete imaging hardware supply chain—from detector fabrication to X-ray tube assembly—under one roof.
This development strengthens Varex’s manufacturing capabilities and supports India’s original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), component suppliers, and diagnostic innovators. Additionally, the new facility positions India as a competitive exporter of imaging technologies, particularly to emerging and developing markets.
The Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) is India’s premier medical technology manufacturing park, based in Visakhapatnam. Since its inception, AMTZ has been at the forefront of advancing healthcare innovation, production, and policy to support both national and global health systems.
