Valmet has successfully wrapped up Beyond Circularity, its largest research and development program to date, marking a major milestone in its sustainability and innovation journey. The four-year initiative, launched in 2022 under Business Finland’s Veturi program, brought together more than 370 partners with a shared goal of accelerating the green transition and supporting customer industries on the path to carbon neutrality.
Beyond Circularity played a central role in advancing Valmet’s long-term sustainability objectives and technology roadmap. Innovation under the program was structured around seven strategic focus areas, covering recycling solutions, bio-refining technologies, improved resource efficiency, advanced automation, and new business models designed to challenge conventional industry practices.
The program reinforced Valmet’s role as a technology partner for industries undergoing structural change. Through collaborative development, Valmet and its partners explored practical solutions that enable lower emissions, improved material use, and more regenerative industrial processes.
Beyond Circularity was a company-wide effort, engaging teams across all business areas. More than 400 Valmet employees contributed to the work, gaining new capabilities in ecosystem-based collaboration and cross-functional innovation. In total, 47 joint development projects were launched with ecosystem partners, making the initiative one of the most extensive collaborative programs in Valmet’s history.
The initiative also strengthened long-term partnerships beyond individual projects. Several ecosystems formed during the program will continue operating, ensuring ongoing cooperation in circular economy solutions and sustainable technologies well beyond the program’s conclusion. These networks are expected to deliver continued innovation and industry-wide impact in the years ahead.
The outcomes of Beyond Circularity extend beyond technical advancements. The program helped embed new ways of working within Valmet, fostering closer collaboration across business units and with external partners, and supporting a cultural shift toward more open and integrated innovation.
