The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF) have teamed up to address the escalating plastic waste issue in Asia. This region, grappling with rapid urbanization and increasing plastic consumption, faces severe challenges in managing waste, which is significantly affecting the environment.
Many of the world’s top rivers contributing to oceanic plastic pollution are located in Asia, leading to devastating impacts on marine life and human health. Sixteen of the twenty largest polluting rivers account for over two-thirds of the global plastic waste entering oceans.
To combat this, UNDP and TCCF are launching a comprehensive program across nine Asian countries, backed by a $15 million grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation. The initiative, which begins in India, aims to improve waste management, boost recycling, curb plastic leakage, and foster local solutions while encouraging regional cooperation. By applying best practices and developing innovative waste collection and recycling models, the program hopes to reduce disposable plastic use and improve waste workers’ livelihoods.
Christophe Bahuet, UNDP’s Deputy Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, emphasized the program’s holistic approach to building sustainable waste management models and promoting the circular economy. Carlos Pagoaga, President of The Coca-Cola Foundation, echoed the importance of collaboration to improve waste systems and recycling infrastructure, benefiting both local communities and the environment.
Founded in 1984, The Coca-Cola Foundation has awarded over $1.6 billion in grants, supporting initiatives that strengthen communities globally, focusing on safe water access, climate resilience, and circular economy practices.
