The 9th and 10th O3b mPOWER satellites, developed by Boeing for global satellite operator SES, were successfully launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 5:12 p.m. EDT. Engineers have confirmed that both satellites are now sending signals from orbit. Roughly two hours after lift-off, they detached from the rocket and began post-launch system checks managed by Boeing’s mission control in El Segundo, California—home to the world’s largest satellite production facility.
These satellites are equipped with advanced xenon-powered thrusters and are currently navigating a 130-day journey toward Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), around 8,000 kilometers above Earth. Once in position, they will join the eight O3b mPOWER satellites already delivering reliable and high-capacity connectivity to customers across the globe. According to Boeing’s Michelle Parker, each additional satellite not only increases total network capacity but also strengthens performance and resilience, thanks to innovative engineering and optimized production methods.
Since its commercial rollout in April 2024, the O3b mPOWER constellation has been delivering low-latency, high-speed broadband service comparable to terrestrial networks, covering nearly 95% of the world’s population. SES CEO Adel Al-Saleh highlighted the significant impact the service has made, powering communication networks for telecom providers, transport industries, and governments—including NATO and the governments of Luxembourg and the United States. This latest launch brings further capacity to meet growing global demand.
Built with adaptable, software-defined beam technology, the satellites can respond in real time to shifting customer and geographic demands. Boeing originally enhanced this feature for military use in its SATCOM projects with the U.S. Space Force.
The hardened technology ensures secure, uninterrupted service, even under challenging conditions. Boeing, a key player in aerospace and space technology, continues to lead innovation in global communications while maintaining its focus on safety, quality, and integrity.
