TVS Motor Company anticipates substantial growth in two-wheeler sales during the upcoming festive season, driven by a robust revival in rural demand and favorable monsoon conditions, according to Aniruddha Haldar, Senior Vice President – Head of Commuter Business.
In an interview with PTI, Haldar emphasized that the expansion of the two-wheeler market is also being fueled by the increasing popularity of scooters in rural areas. “In the initial months of this fiscal year, the two-wheeler industry has witnessed a 13 percent growth, which is notably higher compared to recent years,” Haldar remarked.
“What is even more encouraging is the trend of rural demand starting to surpass that of urban regions.” Haldar pointed out that when rural demand begins to outpace urban demand, it is a very promising indicator for the two-wheeler sector as a whole.
“Considering these positive signs and the fact that this year’s monsoon, despite causing excessive rainfall in some regions, has overall been abundant, we are optimistic that the two-wheeler industry will surpass the current growth rates as we enter the festive season,” he asserted.
TVS Motor Company is confident in its ability to outperform the industry average growth and further strengthen its position, he added. Delving into the factors contributing to the revival of the two-wheeler segment after years of subdued growth, Haldar explained, “We are observing a growing acceptance of scooters even in rural markets.”
The scooter segment, which now represents 32 percent of the entire two-wheeler industry, is poised for further expansion, he noted. “Looking ahead, a larger portion of the market is likely to shift towards scooters. This is largely because the technological advancements have significantly narrowed the gap in fuel efficiency between motorcycles and scooters, which was previously a deterrent for many consumers considering the switch,” Haldar elaborated.
In addition to the improved fuel efficiency, scooters offer various inherent advantages in terms of space, comfort, and convenience, he highlighted. “Moreover, the consistent investments in infrastructure by the government over the years have led to a substantial improvement in the quality of roads, even in rural areas, which has further supported the growth of the scooter industry,” Haldar observed.
Furthermore, the importance of personal mobility has come to the forefront, with multiple family members using the vehicle for various purposes, he added. This shift in consumer behavior, coupled with the aforementioned factors, has created a conducive environment for the two-wheeler industry to thrive, particularly in the context of the approaching festive season.
