Turno and ThunderPlus have teamed up to establish a network of ultra-fast 1 megawatt charging stations along major highways in India, starting with the Hyderabad to Vizag route. The partnership aims to tackle range anxiety and drive the adoption of electric buses and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. This project is part of ThunderPlus’ “One District, One Thunder” initiative, which aims to set up at least one high-powered charging station in each district of India, with a focus on national and state highways.
“While these stations are designed primarily for electric buses, they will also serve as semi-public charging hubs. This collaboration will alleviate charging concerns and facilitate quicker EV adoption across the country,” said Rajeev YSR, CEO of ThunderPlus.
Sudhindra Reddy, Founder of Electrigo, Turno’s subsidiary, expressed his excitement about the project, saying, “With this partnership, Electrigo aims to replace 10 crore kilometers of diesel bus usage with electric by the end of 2026, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future.”
Charging stations are already operational in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Vizag, and Rajahmundry, with plans to expand to additional key highways soon. While India’s electric vehicle market has been growing, the commercial EV sector faces challenges, particularly due to the lack of adequate charging infrastructure for long-haul travel. Commercial EVs require more powerful charging solutions to handle larger batteries and operational demands.
The introduction of 1 MW charging technology marks a major leap forward, reducing charging times for large commercial vehicles from hours to mere minutes. This innovation supports India’s ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels in transportation.
ThunderPlus is a leader in EV charging infrastructure development, while Turno focuses on promoting commercial EV adoption through Electrigo, which provides electrification solutions for large vehicle fleets.
