Located in Jena known as the ‘City of Photonics’ in Germany, Active Fiber Systems GmbH (AFS) is a technological leader for high-power femtosecond laser systems. TRUMPF plans to maintain and expand the location in Jena and the independence of the research-oriented company even after the majority takeover.
Market and technology leaders in machine tools and lasers for industrial manufacturing TRUMPF has acquired an 80 per cent stake in Active Fiber Systems GmbH (AFS), a company based in Jena, Germany, that specializes in fibre lasers.
AFS develops and manufactures ultrashort-pulse laser systems and fibre-laser systems used primarily in science and research. In addition to basic research, its areas of application include the generation of extremely short-wavelength light with high coherence, biomedical imaging and material processing.
"AFS is now a member of the TRUMPF Group! We, TRUMPF and AFS, expect this change to generate synergy effects in research and to further expand the market shares of both companies in the growing field of ultrafast lasers for science applications", Active Fiber Systems GmbH shared after the acquisition.
As a majority stakeholder in AFS, TRUMPF hopes to leverage synergies in the research and further development of its existing ultrashort-pulse laser portfolio and to expand its business in this growing field. Founded in Jena in 2009, Active Fiber Systems has a workforce of 37 employees. TRUMPF plans to retain the location in Jena and build on the research-driven company’s independent standing even after the takeover as a majority stakeholder.
