TRUMPF and SiMa.ai Partner to Enhance Laser Technology with AI

TRUMPF and SiMa.ai have announced a partnership to add AI to several TRUMPF laser systems, including welding, cutting, marking, and 3D printing. Richard Bannmüller, CTO of TRUMPF Laser Technology, emphasized the strategic importance of AI for TRUMPF and highlighted SiMa.ai as the ideal partner.

TRUMPF will provide its laser application expertise, while SiMa.ai will contribute its machine learning system on chip (MLSoC) technology. Harald Kröger, Head of Sales and President of Automotive Business at SiMa.ai, noted that their MLSoC technology, combined with TRUMPF’s AI software, will drive the industry forward.

SiMa.ai, based in San Jose, California, and Stuttgart, Germany, employs around 200 people. Their AI technology significantly boosts performance and energy efficiency, benefiting various applications from computer vision to generative AI.

This collaboration will speed up complex material processing by integrating AI chips directly into laser systems. These AI-optimized sensors can monitor and evaluate laser welding quality in real time, processing over 3,000 images per second. In electric car production, this real-time quality inspection can replace complex testing procedures, improving battery manufacturing quality and reducing reject rates, potentially lowering electric car prices for consumers.
