TRUMPF has significantly enhanced its TruMicro 6030 ultra-short pulse laser, increasing its power output from 200 to 300 watts—a 50% boost. Alongside this, the laser now features an upgraded control system that adjusts in real time, offering greater precision and speed during processing. This improvement is expected to benefit manufacturers across multiple sectors, with a notable impact on battery production for electronics and electric vehicles.

“Battery makers, especially, can take full advantage of the increased capabilities to cut intricate foil structures used in high-volume production,” explains Steffen Rübling, who oversees product management for ultrashort pulse lasers at the company. The updated TruMicro 6030 is being showcased at the LASER – World of Photonics trade show in Munich.

Cutting battery foils, especially for devices like smartphones or electric vehicles, presents several technical challenges. These materials often have multilayer coatings and complex geometries. “Each battery type demands a specific approach, and high power along with real-time pulse control makes efficient large-scale production possible,” Rübling adds.

Thanks to the system’s Femto Real-Time Control feature, laser settings can be modified instantly during the process, tailoring the beam to different sections of the foil. This streamlines production and reduces equipment needs by allowing a single laser source to handle diverse tasks.

In addition to foil cutting, the more powerful system enhances laser drilling capabilities. For example, when creating membranes used in filtering microplastics, the laser can now split its pulses into as many as 500 precise points using custom optics. “This multi-spot method is key to making membrane drilling viable at an industrial level,” Mr Rübling explains. The TruMicro 6030 is engineered for 24/7 use in demanding production environments. TRUMPF has built the system using reliable components aimed at delivering consistent results and long service life.

TRUMPF provides advanced manufacturing technology, focusing on machine tools and industrial lasers.
