Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has joined hands with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to set up a Mobility Engineering Laboratory. This new facility aims to equip future engineers with the skills needed for advanced mobility solutions. The lab will focus on electrified vehicle powertrain technologies, using Hardware-in-Loop (HIL) simulation for testing and development.
From 2024 to 2027, TKM will support the lab’s establishment, providing equipment like a high-speed dynamometer, battery emulator, automation and control systems, vehicle simulation software, and motor and engine mounting hardware.
The lab will aid research in various departments, including Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. A key feature will be the HIL Test facility, which combines real-world measurements with simulations for efficient and cost-effective testing of vehicle components like engines, motors, and batteries.
The lab will help design and develop vehicle drivetrain configurations and control strategies, ensuring safety and performance while reducing costs and development time.
Prof. G Rangarajan, Director of IISc, stated, “This collaboration with TKM will bring together the best minds in academia and industry, leading to significant advancements in electrified vehicle powertrain technologies. The lab will also support our new MTech program in Mobility Engineering, preparing future engineers to transform the automotive industry.”
Sudeep Dalvi, Senior Vice President of TKM, added, “This MoU marks a major milestone in fostering innovation in mobility engineering. The lab will be a hub for pioneering research, addressing challenges like climate change and cleaner transportation. We believe this initiative will drive groundbreaking research and nurture the next generation of engineers for sustainable mobility.”
TKM has been recognized as an Industrial Training Provider by the Government Tool Room & Training Centre (GTTC). In January 2021, TKM signed an MoU to provide industry-specific training at GTTC locations. TKM is also setting up Centers of Excellence in Bengaluru to offer engineering students hands-on experience with powertrains.
Through initiatives like the Toyota Technical Training Institute and the Toyota Technical Education Program, TKM offers world-class training to rural youth in Karnataka. TKM also supports the construction and renovation of school infrastructure in rural and semi-urban areas, ensuring safe learning environments. Since 2001, TKM’s social development efforts have positively impacted over 2.3 million lives, addressing community needs across the region.
