Toyota Motor Corporation reported a decline in global production for the 10th consecutive month in November, even as worldwide sales rose for the second straight month, fueled by strong demand in the United States and China. The Japanese automaker produced 869,230 vehicles globally in November, marking a 6.2% decrease compared to the same month last year. This decline was steeper than the 0.8% drop observed in October.
In the U.S., production fell by 11.8%, despite the resumption of manufacturing for the Grand Highlander and Lexus TX SUV models in late October following a four-month pause. In China, output dipped 1.6%, showing improvement from the 9% decline recorded in October, driven by robust local sales of the Granvia and Sienna minivans and the electric sedan bZ3, co-developed with BYD.
To strengthen its position against competitors like BYD, the company plans to establish a dedicated manufacturing facility in Shanghai, aiming to produce electric vehicles for its Lexus brand by 2027, according to a report by Nikkei. In Japan, which accounts for about one-third of Toyota’s global production, November output dropped 9.3%, partly due to a two-day production suspension at its Fujimatsu and Yoshiwara facilities.
Despite the production challenges, Toyota achieved record sales for November, with 920,569 vehicles sold globally, a 1.7% increase from the previous year. For the January-to-November period, Toyota’s global production totaled approximately 8.75 million vehicles, down 5.2% from the same period in 2023, while global sales declined by 1.2%. These figures include Lexus vehicles but exclude those from group companies Hino and Daihatsu.
