During the recent visit of Belgian Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten to TotalEnergies‘ Antwerp refinery battery storage project, the company unveiled its intentions to embark on a second project in Belgium. This new endeavor will be located at TotalEnergies’ depot in Feluy and is projected to feature a robust power rating of 25 MW and a substantial capacity of 75 MWh.
The project will be realized using forty Intensium Max High Energy lithium-ion containers provided by Saft, a leading supplier in the field. Scheduled to commence operations by the conclusion of 2025, this initiative represents a significant step forward in TotalEnergies’ commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
With a combined investment nearing €70 million, these two projects will substantially enhance TotalEnergies’ storage capacity in Belgium to an impressive 50 MW / 150 MWh. The implementation of these battery storage facilities plays a pivotal role in fortifying the resilience of the electricity grid, offering crucial flexibility, and assisting in alleviating grid congestion issues.
Furthermore, these facilities play a crucial role in the expansion of renewable energy sources in the country, effectively addressing the intermittent nature of renewables by providing necessary solutions. “We are delighted to announce the commencement of this new storage project in Feluy, coming on the heels of our Antwerp project, which is set to be operational by year-end.
These projects align perfectly with our integrated development strategy for electricity, not only in Belgium but on a global scale,” remarked Olivier Jouny, Senior Vice President, Integrated Power at TotalEnergies. “The implementation of these technical systems also serves to underscore the European leadership of our affiliate specialized in battery production, Saft, and its industrial-scale stationary storage expertise.”
