Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation has introduced the TLX9161T, a compact automotive photorelay in an SO12L-T package that delivers an output withstand voltage of 1500V (min). The product is designed for use in high-voltage automotive battery systems, supporting safer and more efficient electric vehicle operations. Volume production begins today.

The adoption of electric vehicles requires shorter charging times and longer driving ranges, which depend on efficient battery management. The TLX9161T provides electrical isolation for battery monitoring systems, helping ensure stable performance and safe operation of high-voltage packs. By miniaturizing the MOSFET chip used in the earlier TLX9160T, Toshiba has achieved a package footprint about 25% smaller while retaining the same pin layout, simplifying design integration and contributing to reduced system size and cost.

The device employs a resin with a Comparative Tracking Index (CTI) greater than 600, classified as Material Group I under IEC 60664-1 standards. Combined with a creepage distance exceeding 5 mm, it supports continuous operation at up to 1000V, meeting strict automotive safety requirements. Toshiba plans to expand its automotive photorelay portfolio to address the growing demand for EV solutions and contribute to a carbon-neutral society.

This device is well-suited for battery management systems, where it supports functions such as voltage monitoring, ground fault detection, and relay sticking detection. It also serves as a reliable replacement for traditional mechanical relays, offering improved efficiency and durability in demanding automotive and industrial applications.

Key highlights include a compact SO12L-T package (7.76 × 10.0 × 2.45 mm, typ.), a minimum output withstand voltage of 1500V, and a normally open (1-Form-A) configuration. It also features an avalanche current rating of 0.6mA, isolation voltage of 5000Vrms (min), and complies with AEC-Q101 qualification as well as IEC 60664-1 standards, ensuring high reliability and safety.
