Gorakhpur witnessed a major step towards clean energy as Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath inaugurated Torrent Group’s Green Hydrogen Plant today. The facility has been developed by Torrent Power in collaboration with Torrent Gas, marking the first Green Hydrogen plant in the state and the largest blending initiative in India’s City Gas Distribution (CGD) sector.
The plant, with an annual production capacity of 72 TPA, will supply Green Hydrogen blended with natural gas—up to 2% concentration—through Torrent Gas’ existing city gas pipeline network. The blended fuel will reach households, CNG stations, and industries across Gorakhpur, making cleaner energy accessible to everyday consumers.
Torrent Gas, authorised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), already operates 32 CNG stations, supplies piped gas to over 12,000 homes and 73 industries in Gorakhpur, Sant Kabirnagar, and Kushinagar districts, and plans significant expansion of its CGD network. Green Hydrogen is produced by splitting water through electrolysis powered by renewable energy such as solar, wind, or hydropower. Unlike hydrogen derived from fossil fuels, it generates no direct carbon emissions, making it a critical element in reducing environmental impact. Blending it with natural gas allows cleaner fuel distribution using existing infrastructure while fostering early adoption of hydrogen in India.
Speaking at the inauguration, Shri Adityanath highlighted, “Green Hydrogen is vital for achieving the goals of the National Green Hydrogen Mission 2030. Uttar Pradesh has set a target of producing 1 MMT per annum and framed policies to attract investments in this sector. With this project, clean energy is reaching people directly—in their kitchens, industries, and vehicles—improving lives while supporting the nation’s energy transition.” He also noted that PNG and CNG availability has improved safety, affordability, and convenience for households, commuters, and industries in Gorakhpur.
Jinal Mehta, Director, Torrent Group, said, “The commissioning of this Green Hydrogen plant is a milestone in our contribution to India’s energy transition. Integrating Green Hydrogen into Gorakhpur’s CGD network demonstrates a scalable pathway to the country’s net-zero goals. This initiative reduces emissions, builds demand for green molecules, and sets the foundation for larger-scale hydrogen adoption in the future.” He expressed gratitude to the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Hon’ble Chief Minister for their support in advancing sustainable energy solutions.
With a diversified presence in Pharmaceuticals, Power, City Gas Distribution, Sports, and recent forays into Electricals and Diagnostics, Torrent Group continues to strengthen its role in critical sectors. Torrent Power, with ~8 GWp generation and pump storage capacity, serves over 4.21 million customers across twelve cities, while Torrent Gas operates CGD networks in 34 districts across 7 states and 1 Union Territory.
