Tolins Tyres Limited has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Terra Rubber Private Limited, has started construction of a new Reclaim Rubber manufacturing facility in Palakkad, Kerala. The project is part of the company’s plans to strengthen its position across the rubber value chain and increase the use of recovered materials in manufacturing.
The facility will use scrap tyres and other rubber waste, including rubber compound waste, as raw materials. Through a controlled devulcanisation process, the waste rubber will be converted into Reclaimed Rubber that can be used in suitable rubber compounds as a partial replacement for virgin rubber, depending on product specifications.
The project will allow the Tolins Group to move further upstream in the rubber value chain by converting end-of-life tyres and other rubber waste into a usable industrial material. The company expects the facility to create an additional source of raw material while improving material efficiency and reducing dependence on virgin resources.
The plant will also provide Terra Rubber with an opportunity to participate in India’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework for waste tyres. Subject to applicable registrations, certifications and regulatory requirements, eligible recycling activity could enable the company to generate EPR certificates against qualifying quantities of waste tyres and recycled products, including Reclaimed Rubber. These certificates may subsequently be transferred to registered tyre producers to help meet their EPR obligations. This creates a potential additional revenue stream for Terra Rubber alongside the sale of Reclaimed Rubber.
Dr KV Tolin, Promoter, Chairman and Managing Director, Tolins Tyres, said the project represents an important step towards creating a more integrated rubber ecosystem. “The groundbreaking of Terra Rubber’s Reclaim Rubber facility marks an important milestone in our journey towards building a more integrated and sustainable rubber ecosystem. We are looking to convert end-of-life tyres and rubber waste into a valuable raw material that can be brought back into productive use,” he said.
He added that the combination of Reclaimed Rubber sales and the potential EPR certificate opportunity could create multiple avenues of value from tyre recycling, subject to regulatory requirements. The facility is expected to support resource recovery, reduce waste going to disposal and strengthen Tolins Tyres’ participation across the rubber manufacturing chain.
