Tobii and STMicroelectronics Launch High-Performance In-Cabin Sensing Tech into Volume Production

STMicroelectronics

Tobii, a leader in human attention technology, and STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor manufacturer, have commenced large-scale production of an advanced in-vehicle sensing platform. Developed for a top-tier European automaker, this innovative system integrates an ultra-wide-angle camera with intelligent monitoring software to elevate both safety and in-cabin user interaction.

The newly launched platform is designed to function reliably under various lighting conditions, offering high-quality performance in both daylight and nighttime scenarios. Its compact, single-camera setup simplifies installation while meeting strict automotive safety benchmarks.

Adrian Capata, Senior Vice President of Tobii Autosense, stated “This project represents more than a technological advance—it’s a step forward in how vehicles understand their occupants. Working closely with ST has allowed us to achieve optimal image performance using a single lens system. By blending visible spectrum and infrared detection, we’re enabling smarter, context-aware interiors that adapt to human presence and activity.”

Alexandre Balmefrezol, Executive Vice President and Imaging Sub-Group General Manager at STMicroelectronics, added “Our joint development with Tobii has led to an intelligent, production-ready sensing solution that’s reliable and scalable. We are now ramping up manufacturing to meet increasing industry demand and support broader adoption in upcoming vehicle platforms.”

This interior sensing solution brings together Tobii’s software expertise in attention-based computing with STMicroelectronics’ VD1940 image sensor, tailored specifically for automotive use. The VD1940 features a 5.1-megapixel hybrid sensor capable of capturing both visible (RGB) and infrared light through a single lens. Its expansive field of view ensures full cabin coverage for comprehensive monitoring.

With dual video stream processing, the system powers both Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) and Occupancy Monitoring Systems (OMS). It helps vehicles detect driver attention, fatigue, distraction, and also identifies occupants, contributing to improved safety and personalized in-car experiences.

Tobii, through its Autosense division, is actively involved in numerous automotive programs, having secured integration across more than 160 vehicle models worldwide. Its sensing solutions are already active on roads globally.

STMicroelectronics’ VD1940 sensor is part of the SafeSense by ST platform—a suite of sensing technologies developed for safety-critical automotive functions. Designed with cybersecurity and functional safety in mind, the solution addresses the increasing demand for dependable in-cabin systems.

As a vertically integrated semiconductor company, ST manages the entire supply chain—from design to production—ensuring component reliability, supply stability, and compliance with automotive standards. The VD1940 sensor is now in full-scale production at ST’s European facilities and available for integration by OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers.

Headquartered in Sweden, Tobii is a global innovator in eye tracking and human attention technology.
