Titagarh Rail Systems (TRSL), renowned for its railway freight wagons, has commenced production of trainsets for the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL). This initiative is part of a contract with China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) for the Phase 2 Yellow Line project of the Bengaluru Metro.

The production of trainsets at Titagarh Rail’s state-of-the-art facility in Uttarpara, West Bengal, marks a significant milestone in the company’s contribution to India’s urban transportation infrastructure. In a filing with the stock exchange on Friday, TRSL highlighted the importance of this project.

“The contract between BMRCL and CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co, signed in December 2019, faced challenges, causing delays in meeting the original deadlines. To address these delays, CRRC sought additional time and subsequently entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Titagarh Rail Systems,” the filing stated. Under this MoU, TRSL is tasked with manufacturing the trainsets at its advanced facility.

Under the agreement with BMRCL, TRSL is responsible for producing 34 of the 36 trainsets required for the Yellow Line. Only two trainsets, comprising 12 coaches, will be manufactured in China. To meet the project’s specific requirements, Titagarh Rail has established a dedicated stainless steel production line at its Uttarpara facility. The first trainset is scheduled for delivery in August 2024.

TRSL, formerly known as Titagarh Wagons, is India’s largest manufacturer of freight rolling stock, with its Bharatpur facility in Rajasthan specializing in wagon production. The company is rapidly diversifying into the manufacture of passenger rail systems and is developing driverless metro trains in collaboration with ABB India, the Indian arm of the Swiss-Swedish power and automation group ABB.

The commencement of trainset production for BMRCL’s Yellow Line underscores Titagarh Rail’s expanding role in the urban transportation sector and its commitment to enhancing India’s railway infrastructure.
