Titagarh Naval Systems Limited (TNSL) has secured in-principle approval from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways for its proposed brownfield expansion at Falta in West Bengal. The approval comes under the Government of India’s Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS), reinforcing national efforts to strengthen domestic shipbuilding capabilities.
The expansion project aligns with the government’s broader push to develop a globally competitive maritime ecosystem through initiatives such as the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Scheme and the Shipbuilding Development Scheme. These programs aim to enhance infrastructure, encourage indigenous manufacturing, and support both defence and commercial shipbuilding.
The proposed project, with an estimated investment of approximately INR 610 crore, has received clearance following recommendations from the third Inter-Ministerial Governing Board of the National Shipbuilding Mission. As part of the scheme, the government will provide capital assistance of around INR 129 crore toward eligible plant and machinery, subject to compliance with scheme guidelines.
The Falta expansion is expected to significantly enhance TNSL’s infrastructure and technological capabilities. Once operational, the upgraded facility will be equipped to cater to a wide range of shipbuilding requirements, including defence vessels, commercial ships, and export-oriented projects. The development is also set to position West Bengal as a key hub for advanced maritime manufacturing.
Commenting on the milestone, Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Titagarh Rail Systems Limited, acknowledged the role of government support in enabling the project. He noted that the approval reflects confidence in India’s ambition to build a self-reliant and globally competitive shipbuilding industry. He further emphasized the company’s commitment to establishing a modern shipyard that contributes to defence indigenisation, national security, and international market participation.
Titagarh Naval Systems Limited is being established as a wholly owned subsidiary to drive focused growth in the shipbuilding segment. The upcoming facility will incorporate advanced automation and Industry 4.0 technologies and is designed to handle vessels of up to 180 meters in length, with an annual production capacity of 12 to 16 ships.
Building on a legacy of delivering more than 35 vessels for prestigious clients including the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, the company aims to expand its footprint in specialized shipbuilding. The expansion also supports broader national initiatives such as Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, positioning TNSL as a key contributor to India’s maritime growth story.
